Inspiring!

Wow... seriously inspiring. You hear about these types of stories all the time, but this book hit home for me on a number of levels. For starters, I've been to many of the places David writes about... and the book is written from a very grounded real perspective. No holds bard! Nothing held back. Incredible story with real live ways to impact your own life right now.

WOW I loved this book "How I Went From Welfare To Millionaire Without Winning The Lottery", I actually read it in about 24 hours and I'm not the fastest or most diligent reader at all but this book is super interesting, extremely inspiring and highly entertaining, I know what its like to struggle in MLM myself when you don't really know how to grow it or how everything works plus I'm a huge martial arts and MMA fan as well and I almost bought a VW Passat myself, I ended up getting a Jetta instead many years ago cause it was cheaper and a little more sporty so I understand David pretty well and have quite a bit in common with him except his success really but if you read this book you will learn he wasn't always successful and his journey is one of the most inspiring stories I have ever read or heard of and I encourage not only MLM fans to read this but anyone who wants to be inspired and entertained by a truly great book and amazing story, buy and read this book NOW if you are even remotely contemplating on purchasing it plus it will encourage anyone who is thinking about MLM to give it a try and if you're already involved in MLM this book will for sure light a fire under you to truly want to work the business and feel you can have success just like David did cause he holds nothing back and tells you how he did it with all his ups and downs in simple terms in a very easy to read fun honest style, GREAT BOOK, I will be reading his other book "How to build a humungous downline in Network Marketing" next very soon, thank you for sharing your story and being so honest David!

Tears in Paradise – Suffering and Struggles of Indians in Fiji 1879-2004 reveals the horrific treatment of Indian indentured workers (Girmitiyas) in Fiji by the British from 1879-1919. Indenture system (Girmit) under which they were recruited was slavery by another name. Working and living conditions were so atrocious that Fiji had the highest rate of suicide in the world and highest rate of infanticide among the colonies that deployed indentured labour. Author, Rajendra Prasad, a descendant of Girmitiya grandparents, graphically captures the suffering, struggles and sacrifices of the pioneer generation, “Overseer’s whip comes down upon her half-naked back and legs. The child is struck also. Both are crying…Barnicoat poured boiling water on Poligardu’s genitals…Blomfield bashed Naraini’s head on stones… her face covered in blood...” The British had recruited 60,965 Indians to work in the sugarcane plantations in Fiji. Deceit and deception was widely used in the recruitment process to trap the innocent, poor and ignorant peasants for countries they never knew or dreamt of going. It tore their hearts when they realized that it was separation from their motherland. In 1882 when ships Berar and Poonah I set sail for Fiji, fifteen recruits jumped overboard and drowned. In the ships, many fell sick and some died of homesickness. In the fields, they worked for long hours and ritually suffered whips, kicks and sticks of the white Overseers. Women in advanced stage of pregnancy were forced to work. Some gave birth in the fields and most were required to return to work within days of child birth. The rigors of plantation life changed their demeanour. Methodist missionary, Hannah Dudley, in her letter to the Indian leaders on November 4, 1912, asked for the abolition of the indenture system. She wrote, “I shall never forget the first time I saw ‘indentured’ women. They were returning from their day’s work. The look on those women’s faces haunts me…” The second part of the book captures the contemporary history of Fiji under the theme “An Uncertain Future”, echoing racial discrimination and marginalization of Indo-Fijians by successive Governments, as anxiety and insecurity about their future kept them on the edge. Tears in Paradise eloquently captures the gruesome events - suffering that will haunt, endurance that will challenge, violence that will confound and struggle that will inspire. One reader wrote, “…once in my hand, I could not put it down and cried at several places. It eloquently brought out the human element often missing in other historical publications on the subject.”

It is a must read book. Its about the journey of Indians from India to Fiji and how Indians were lied, betrayed and taken against there will. I loved reading this book and recommend this book to everyone who like reading.

Always wanted a copy of my ancestral history... the Girmit Script of my ancestors. I have read every word with so much emotion, tears, pride and love held me tight. Will be reading it again and again. Thanks to Mr Rajendra Prasad for his efforts in putting this amazing book.

This book will definitely bring down the political curtains for India's premier republican dynasty,the Nehrus, if what has been expounded here finds acceptance by the Indian political elite. First Document discusses the reasons why Indian democracy continues to be majoritarian centric when it comes to access to headship of government (Prime Ministership).

Since Independence, 59 years ago, the Prime Ministers of India have all risen only from the majority Hindi speaking states of India. There was only one non-Hindi speaking prime minister and he did not last more than 10 months. In spite of this lopsided representation of Hindi speakers in this most powerful cabinet post the 500 million strong linguistic minorities have not made an issue of it because the categorization of minorities in India was based on religious grounds.

The identification of the word minority to refer only to say Muslims or Christians was a brilliant masterstroke in the evolution of political categorization in India. India's linguistic minorities were made to believe they belonged to the majority. Prior to every Parliamentary elections their local linguistic identities are dissolved in this pan Indian/pan Hindu majority. While assimilation is used as a political strategy to ensure governmental formation, non-assimilative, local identity however is used as a criteria to reject the candidature of the non-Hindi candidates for prime ministership.

The author's case is that this state of affairs is too good to be true for the Hindi speaking groups to last for long. With the arrival of coalition governance India's non-Hindi linguistic groups would soon become vociferous and demand a share in the Prime Ministerial pie. First Document should serve to provide the intellectual basis for such a demand.

Even though First Document revolves around India denying its 500 million strong linguistic minorities the right to become Head of Government (Prime Minister) what he says is true for all countries wedded to a democratic polity. The worlds largest democracies have been denying the right of its minorities to become Head of Government. This denial is being done by them by clever manipulation and selective interpretation of the majoritarian written constitutions.

In most democracies members of the minority are told that being citizens they have equal opportunity and equal ability as any other to become Head of Government. Though opportunity exists for a member of the minority to make it to the most powerful job of the land, the ability or probability of their making it to the top job is either low or next to impossible? Opportunity is just eligibility neither does this so called ability convert itself to a probability of any measure. First Document addresses precisely this question. The author suggests a method call PCR to set right this anomaly seen even in mature democracies.

Brilliant.The book poses some valid questions that beg an answer. If democracy is about equality why do democratic countries not allow members of minority communities living within its borders to become Head of Government? The author has set forth some cogent arguments demanding a share for minorities in the most powerful job of a land. In the world of computers there are version releases for software. Lower software is upgraded to a higher release. First Document's PCR democracies should come under the category of upgraded democracies. The author comments, tongue in cheek, that democracies that do not allow members of its minority communities to become head of government as belonging to the same category as the bogus Peoples Democracy of the Soviet era. First Document is without doubt a brilliant work of political literature.

First Document has all the ingredients to shake the Indian political world. The author claims, not unjustifiably, that the Nehrus may have to seek retirement from political life if his suggestions become a reality. The book calls into question the very basis of the strength by which the Nehrus have survived this long in Indian politics. The Nehrus would have no place in an Indian democracy that practices PCR. In India in future the contest for the Prime Ministerial position is no more going to be limited to just the Singhs the Tiwaris and Lals one can see the Naidus, Jeyalalithas and Subramaniams from the South too entering the fray.

From the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries, Russia prevailed despite unparalleled onslaughts by powerful Western armies. However, while Europe nurtured limited government, capitalism, and scientific and cultural revolution, early Russian society cultivated autocracy and command economics. Both Europe and Russia eventually created modern infrastructures, but the European model proved more productive and powerful. The post-World War I communist era can be seen as a natural continuation of Russia's autocratic past that, despite its tragic turns, kept Russia globally competitive for decades.

The Russian moment in world history thus began with its first confrontations with Europe in the fifteenth century, and ended in 1991 with the Soviet collapse. In this short, muscular essay, Poe covers Russian history in its widest parameters, assessing various theses about the subject and offering his own. This is an interesting exercise for Russophiles since the historical controversies are enduring and, with regard to the Communist period, very polarized. Right off, Poe rejects the idea that Russians over the centuries have had a predisposition to authoritarianism, expansionism, or messianism--all categories of analysis one can find in the historiography both by Russians and Westerners. But surprisingly, Poe proceeds to interpret Russian history in terms that Russian leaders themselves have used to justify autocracy and territorial expansion: namely, the preservation of independence against European invaders. Since Russia achieved this goal, Poe views the features of Russia that are negative to many historians--its people's comparative poverty and abjectness before the power of the state--as a consequence of geography rather than inherent to Russian history. into a hundred pages of text, one has to have a strong thesis. Poe does: once the Muscovite state collected itself in the sixteenth century, he says, Russia embarked on an alternative path to modernity. Unlike Europe, Russia combined autocracy, "control of the public sphere," state-controlled economy, and "state-sponsored militarism." This mix, moreover, made Russia the only "sustainable society capable of resisting the challenge of Europe." With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the 400-year "Russian moment" ended -- that is, the Russian path to modernity expired, and something else now awaits the country. Much of Poe's general description will not be contested, except by those who consider Russia to be historically a part of Europe. His analysis -- that Russia had no other choice, given its location, lack of resources, and weak society -- will be. If those who disagree can offer a counterargument as compact, vigorous, and accessible as Poe's, the rest of us will greatly benefit.

This terrible piece of work is a big miss

I feel a little strange writing a review of this book, as I got it as a present and feel that holiday pleasure-reads should not require academic work. However, the other reviews are so glowingly positive that a contrary view needs to be presented, to point out the book's many flaws. I actually came to the review section to laugh along at the other critical reviews of this book that I was sure would exist.

I found the arguments in this book to be lazy, poorly substantiated, and inconsistent. He makes flippant statements about 700 years of history, explains how his two points (geography of Russian territory and autocratic nature of Russian state) explain how history unfolded, and say that the result is a unique victory for the Russian tradition over European Imperialism. He points out that if Russia were really a part of Europe, it would look a lot more like Sweden. But it doesn't, so this is proof that Russia has a historical developent outside of the European tradition. Meanwhile, autocracy is behind the success of Russia, because it has remained independent since the 1600's, and other countries were not able to withstand the challenge posed by European imperialism - autocracy must have been the reason for that. He neglects to mention that Russia is the largest country in Europe and had a population much greater than any of the other empires there, and that its military sucesses relied on adopting European technology and administrative methods, and that it's military defeats throughout the last 70 years of its existence were probably avoidable. He never also explains how other nations that had roots outside of the European tradition (which I think means the Roman era, but I can't be sure because he doens't state it very clearly) managed to become succesful. All those Vikings he talks about early in the book...how did they end up as Scandinavian kingdoms, and a member of the Russian community? As with so many things in this book, he brings up elements of history only to discard them when they don't fit into his chosen narrative.

Another example of Poe's confusing reasoning is that the Bolshevik revolution is really a continuation of the Russian "moment in history," yet the revolution caused by the end of the Cold War signals an end to it. Why these revolutions had such conflicting impacts on Russia's role in the world is not explained - we're supposed to just accept these truths to be self-evident. The role of ideology is ignored, and his explanation for popular support of communist government changes from an understanding that autocracy was obsolete, to a belief that property rightfully belonged to all people, to the fact that there wasn't popular support for communism (pg. 75-79) His argument is so simplistic and poorly articulated that I found it really surprising to find it in print.

As for the provocative nature of the book alluded to by other reviewers...Poe's comments reach for bombasticism in their comment about the errors and "mystical politico-religious beliefs" of essentially every other author to write about Russia's relationship with Europe, but his venom is weakly substantiated - again, we're so simply go along with the story he's spinning, without support from such minor details such as critical analysis of facts.

I wish I'd made notes as I read through this, I could have made a note every page or two if I'd bothered to collect every nitwit comment, confusing statement or self-righteous blather in this book. My opposition to this book is not based on my disagreement over certain parts of his argument - I don't disagree with everything he says, and the themes of autocracy and Russian involvement in European affairs are definitely important topics in this subject. It's really the quality of the writing and of the reasoning that irks me. At 140 pages it's a fast read, but not a worthwhile one. I'm fairly confident most people would agree with my analysis of the shabbiness of this work; if you like, read it for yourself and find out. But I'd prefer it if you just didn't ever bother in the first place, because it's a waste of time and money.

First off, the quick and shallow overview of Russian history skips over many facts and developments. The only part of this condensed history that I found decent was the early ethnography of the Slavs, which is also the era of history I'm least familiar with. Perhaps it's as filled with lazy

A significant success

Marshall Poe has achieved prominence as one of the finest empiricists studying early modern Russian history. In the current essay, weighing in at a mere one hundred and thirty breezy pages, Poe finds the seeds of the modern Russian crisis in the early modern period he knows so well. It is a fascinating premise which is certain to draw fire from many quarters. But what separates Poe's book from the myriad "explanations" of the demise of the Russian empire is that this meticulously crafted essay is the work of a first-rate (and sometimes brilliant) scholar. Highly recommended.

Uniquely valuable perspective

Only Clark Kerr could present such a valuable perspective on the modern history of the University of California, as presented in his two volume personal memoir, of which this is the second volume, dealing with external interactions of the university and specifically of the Berkeley campus.
Clark Kerr is surely among the most important leaders of American universities of all time. As professor, Berkeley Chancellor and University of California System President, Kerr played seminal roles in the modern history of the University of California. In his memoir he offers a unique perspective on the period of his experience in this system, which by chance or by his efforts became a transformational period in the history of his university and by extension all of American higher education.
Kerr's exposition is straightforward and remarkably free of the bias that must be expected in such a personal history. He requires two very large volumes to tell his story, but for those of us who care about such things the time invested in reading is well spent.

A Wonderful Guide

Craig Sensei has done a wonderful job with this treatise that remains the foremost primer on Iado. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in Iado, Kenjutsu or Japanese culture in general. It has been quite a long time since I first read this book and having recently picked it up again I felt compelled to post a review and state that it is still at the forefront.

Iai: The Drawing of the Sword is an excellent

work documenting a little known style of

japanese swordsmanship called iai-do, or,

"The Way of the drawing of the sword".

This style of martial art centers on the act

of drawing one's sword as quickly and

efficiently as possible. A person well adept

at it is capable of tossing a fruit into the

air, stepping back, drawing his weapon,

slicing the fruit and resheathing before the

orange halves can hit the ground. It is a

deadly poetry of motion to behold.

Mr.Craig continues to teach this and other

traditional martial arts at his Dojo in

Houston, Texas. He attained the title of

Shi-han or "Master Teacher" in 1973. This

title is rarely given to westerners. I've

visited and talked with Mr. Craig and must

say he is an honorable man and a competent

sensei.

Iai: The Art of Drawing the Sword is good as a refresher, at best. Craig opens his tome with some personal history and stories, which is a fine method of doing things, until he brings his own opinion into it. He gives the impression that spiritualism should account for most everything in iaido; as most practitioners are aware, spiritualism is only one aspect, and technique is equally or more important.
Throughout the book, Craig provides small interludes detailing Japanese history, and other information, some of which is accurate, some of which is very much exaggerated, and some of which is not true. While the thought was nice, he should have researched his facts more.
The drawings accompanying his descriptions of the kata are sketchy and vague; a beginner would have difficulty following them, although someone with grounding in another Japanese sword art such as kenjitsu may have better luck. However, with knowledge of the kata, or at least of the mechanics of the motions, a reader would find this book a helpful reminder, as long as he does not try to base his study entirely on this book.
Overall, this is not a terrible book, but there are much better on the subject, with regards to technique, illustration, and history.

Fun illustrations and a good story

I love the few bits of history mentioned in this book and it respects the child's intellect, instead of talking down to them. The illustrations also entertained and encouraged my imagination. As an adult reading to a child, I also have to be interested in the book. This book encourages children to read - and excellent for children who enjoy food. Have more of Tomie dePaola's books on my Wishlist and gift list!

My Kids Love This Book

My kids (ages 3 and 1) *love* this book!! I read it over and over to them.

I was hoping this book would be more of a handbook, since we just started growing our own popcorn. At first glance, I thought it might have too many words to keep my kids engaged; I'm glad I was wrong. They love it.

There are two methods (at the very end) of popping corn, too.

We may have to purchase another copy of this book. Ours has been very loved.

Whoa! I learned so much from this book!

How have I never read this book before? I'm a fourth grade teacher and we did a STEM project where we had to make a popcorn container. This seemed like a good book to read before the unit but oh man, it applied to our curriculum and I love that it included the characters researching in the book.

Learning about the Skin, how to take Care, and especially avoiding the UV from the Sun

This is the fifth of these "A Harvard Medical School Special Health Report", and I must admit that they all, for me, have been interesting readings. They all are very usable, mostly like easy read lexica containing many details concerning the actual subject.

This book about skin I mostly bought because my wife, from before I met her, has had some problems with her skin, so that she during the years have been visiting a skin doctor for by him getting a special cream. So therefore I want to know more about the skin. But besides this it's also interesting to learn more about the UV from the sun, as we daily in TV, from the producers, are seeing advertising telling how good their creams are for protecting us against the bad UV.

In the chapter, "What is skin?", we have the subtitles "The outermost layer", "The middle layer", "The deepest layer", (the fat), and "Nails and hair". And connected to the writings we are having the Fig. 1 drawing: "The function of the skin", which shows the 3 different layers we have when we from the top of the skin are looking around a � of an inch into the body, in to the beginning of the fat. And on the drawing we in the deepest positioned layer are seeing nearly all of what we there have positioned, as for example the hair, the nerve, the blood vessel and so on. And beside we have a photo showing the difference between hands, as we are watching the hand from a grown up person holding the hand from a newborn.

In the next chapter, "Ski and the aging process", we as the first subtitle are having "Chronological aging", and here we have a photo showing the topside of a hand with a clearly visible case of sun exposure photoaging (fine lines, wrinkles, and brown pigmentation). Then follow the subtitle, the "Photoaging", in which we are informed concerning the radiation from the sun, and here we read about the UVC, UVB, and UVA. And we get the Fig. 2 having a drawing much equal to Fig. 1, except that we here also higher than skin surface have a line for the Ozone stratum (being miles over the surface of the Earth). And we then are having arrows for the 3 UV radiations, with the first one being stopped by the Ozone, the UVB being stopped at the border between the 2 deepest layers, and the UVA being stopped in the deepest layer, the fat. And as the center in this chapter we learn: "Get as little sunshine as possibly", and if we have to go out in the sun, then stay away between 10 and 14 a clock, and protect against the UV. And we learn that the sunshade doesn't protect us against the UV, opposite to the hats, and that UV cancer starting late in life is the result of UV received when we were children!

In the chapter, "Common skin conditions", we first have the subtitle "Dry skin", in which we get Table 1: "Choosing the right treatment", the treatments which we later in the book learn much about. The next subtitles are "Adult acne", "Contact dermatitis", under which we have Table 2: "Contact dermatitis triggers". Then follow the subtitles "Rosacea", "Hair loss", "Excessive hair growth", "Actinic keratosis", = the scale pink or read-brown raised rough patches on sun-exposed skin, "Shingles", = a virus possible in persons born before we got the chickenpox vaccine, and "Drug-resistant skin infections". Then finally in this chapter we have the subtitle "Spider veins and varicose veins". And in each of the subtitles we especially are reading much about the treatments.

In the chapter, "Skin cancer", we have the subtitles "Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas" and "Melanoma". And we in the Fig. 3: "Three kinds of skin cancer", are having 3 big and good drawings, respectably: Squamous cell cancer, Basal cell cancer, and Malignant melanoma, and in the text we read that the Melanoma, even though it only accounts for 4 % of the skin cancer cases, it's responsible for more than 75 % of all the skin cancer deaths.

In the chapter, "Protect your skin", we under small subtitles read about: Sun damage, Medications, Infrared radiation, Cigarettes, Irritants, Facial expressions, How to use sunscreens, and Tanning without the sun. And we get 7 small photos, for example concerning cloth, and head covering.

In the chapter, "Lotions and potions", we have the subtitles "Moisturizers", "Exfoliants", Cosmeceuticals, which contains: hydroxyl acids, vitamins, antioxidants, growth factors, and peptides, "Retinoids", "Other skin care products", and "What to avoid". And we in "Cosmeceuticals" are have half a side concerning Quick guide to product ingredients, which among other are telling about Antioxidants, and Copper peptide.

In the chapter, "Skin rejuvenation procedures", we first are having the subtitles "Doctor or aesthetician", in which we have the Table 3: "Common cosmetic problems and their treatments", which cowers 2 sides with the column Treatment choices, Effectiveness, and Comments, concerning the Problems: Brown spots, Dry skin, Fine lines or fine wrinkles, Forehead lines, and Unwanted hair. Then follow the "Botulinum toxin", where we have the Figure 4: "Down with the frown", a double drawing showing where on the face the Botox needle is used, and the detailed drawing showing the Botox going into the Nerve ending. Then we get to the subtitle "Chemical peels", in which we have the Table 4: "Five most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedyres". Then follow "Lacer procedures" in which we have the Figure 5: "Evolution of a laser". On this drawing we se how the first laser used, back in 1990, the CO2, worked by taken away the whole actual part of skin surface. And besides this we see that the later used lacer, respectively the Non-ablative and the Fractional ablative, works by going down deeper, and in small cylinders.

And then during the rest of this long chapter we have 4 small photos showing professionals working on the patients with respectively: The pulsed-dye laser, The Q-switched laser, The CO2 laser, and the Microdermabrasion. And we read about these, and more, during the subtitles: "Photorejuvenation with intense pulsed light", "LED photomodulation", "Photodynamic therapy", "Radiofrequency", "Soft-tissue augmentation: Fillers and implants". And in the last one of these subtitles we have 1 � sides with "Choosing a filler or implant", under which we learn about: Hyaluronic acid, Collagen, Autologous fat transplants, Microdroplet silicone, and Radiesse and ArteFill. And then finally we get to the subtitle "Microdermabrasion", in which we learn that it's small aluminum hydroxide crystals that's is put into the skin.

And then the book finishes with one side having "Resources organizations", and one side with "Glossary".

I like these "A Harvard Medical School Special Health Report" books, as among other they with the drawings are good for me to use, when I shall explain something to other persons. And beside we in these books are getting ideas about to where science now have reached.

Interesting but not Perfect

The book is a download for $20+ or can be delivered as a book for $20. Could go into more detail and it didn't tell me more than I already knew. Needed more updates to what's happening now. I do a lot of reading and the book felt short.
