From School Library Journal
Pink-cheeked Toby wakes in the night, calls his father, and tells him he wants to see the moon. After taking Toby to the bathroom, the father offers other distractions--a drink of water, a book, and blocks. Toby persists, each time responding, "I want to see the moon." The father finally acquiesces, and Toby predictably falls asleep on his way back to bed. Young listeners will understand Toby's frustration as his father postpones taking him outside. Soft, misty watercolors reinforce the loving, gentle mood of this story. While some may question the necessity of showing an anatomically correct Toby waiting for his diaper change, the scene fits in naturally with the text. A pleasant lap book for cozy moments together. --Jane Dyer Cook, Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library, CA

Dark Side of Love, by Rafik Schami, Anthea Bell

A dead man hangs from the portal of St Paul Chapel in Damascus. He was a Muslim officer and he was murdered. But when Detective Barudi sets out to interrogate the man’s mysterious widow, the Secret Service takes the case away from him. Barudi continues to investigate clandestinely and discovers the murderer’s motive: it is a blood feud between the Mushtak and Shahin clans, reaching back to the beginnings of the 20th century. And, linked to it, a love story that can have no happy ending, for reconciliation has no place within the old tribal structures. Rafik Schami dazzling novel spans a century of Syrian history in which politics and religions continue to torment an entire people. Simultaneously, his poetic stories from three generations tell of the courage of lovers who risk death sooner than deny their passions. He has also written a heartfelt tribute to his hometown Damascus and a great and moving hymn to the power of love.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. LIke the mythopoeic India of Salman Rushdie™s Midnight™s Children, the main protagonist of Schami™s encyclopedic, jigsaw puzzle of a novel is a country: Syria. In telling the story of a Romeo and Juliet–like romance between Farid Mushtak and Rana Shahin, two teens in Damascus in the late 1950s, Schami goes back through their family history, to the Ottoman era, and forwards to 1970. The baroque feud between their families is a microcosm of the internal, patriarchal violence from which the whole country suffers. George Mushtak and his bride, Laila, appear in the Christian village of Mala and begin to make inroads on the power base of Mala™s most powerful man, Jusuf Shahin, beginning a multigenerational feud that creates a legacy of violence—George persecutes his own, Elias, who flees to Damascus, and Elias in turn persecutes his son, Farid; Rana well remembers how her aunt was the victim of an honor killing. Rana™s bullying brother, Jack, marries her off; Farid goes from a punitive stay in a monastery to intensifying persecution and incarceration because of his dissident politics. Through Farid and Rana™s romance, Schami gives voice to the entire chorus of Damascus life. Which is why, despite the grim plot line of revenge, this is essentially a joyous book, an exile™s book of love and a surprisingly fast read. Schami, a major international talent, has a broad range, from the scatological to the sexually comic to the painful, and deserves to establish an American audience. (July)

Review
A doorstop of a novel, this story of love and blood feuds set in Damascus, filled with myths and legends and enough tragedy to last a few lifetimes, opens with a murder and goes deep into a century of Syria's history, politics and religion. Break out the baklava and let it rain. Louisa Ermelino --Publishers Weekly

"Romeo and Juliet meets Arturo Prez-Reverte and John le Carr in the dusty streets of Damascus in this novel from Syrian-born Schami, a bestselling author in his adopted homeland of Germany. The setup: the body of a Syrian intelligence officer is found in a rather unnatural position that rules out suicide. ... What lies beneath Madhi Said's murder... is anything but monosyllabic. Bit by bit, Schami "This first American edition of a novel initially published in Germany in 2004 introduces Syrian-born Schami to English-speaking audiences. At the forefront of the migrant literature movement in Germany, Schami replicates Romeo and Juliet s tale in his complicated and embellished story of two star-crossed lovers, Farid Mushtak and Rana Shahin. The young lovers meet and fall in love in Damascus during the 1950s and encounter numerous obstacles because of a long-standing family feud between their two Christian families. Schami establishes context by recounting the 1907 events that initiated the feud. Moving forward, the narrative spans Syrian social and political history during the first half of the 20th century; a discussion of Farid s experiences as a political dissident reveal the range of political alliances and coups at that time. VERDICT At almost 900 pages, this book is daunting, but patient readers will enjoy rambling through the streets of Damascus, a city that Schami clearly loves and evokes effectively and affectionately. An important contribution to Syrian literature." --Library Journal

"...may turn out to be the first Great Syrian Novel. In "The Dark Side of Love", Rafik Schami exploits all the resources of the classic realist novel and then goes a little further, forging a new form out of Syrian orality. His basic unit is not chapter or paragraph, but story; a thousand bejewelled anecdotes and tales are buried here, ready to spring, but each is melded with such dazzling surety into the whole that reading the book is always compulsive...Tolstoyan in its marrying of the personal, social and political spheres, of private with national life...The canvas is vast and closely painted. It feels encyclopedic, in psychological observation as well as social breadth. There are no faux-magical pyrotechnics in the telling, but richly detailed characters working through real situations, characters whose inherited wounds the reader comes to care deeply about. Each is vividly drawn, with quiet and acute intelligence..."The Dark Side of Love" is a fiction that accurately (if selectively) documents Syrian social history. Its sweep reaches from 1907 to 1970, through the French occupation, the chaotic coup years, the rise of the Ba'ath and the disastrous June war. Farid and Rana swim on the great currents of 20th-century Syrian thought - communism, feminism, nationalism, Islamism - and witness the poisoning of the waters. Farid's torture scenes are painfully, brilliantly narrated. Relations between Christians, Jews and Muslims, between the countryside and the city, between men and women, and between political factions, are explored with subtlety and honesty. It is translated very well from the German..."The Dark Side of Love" illumines almost every side of love, as well as fear, longing, cruelty and lust. Darkness and light alternate like the basalt and marble stripes on Damascene walls, and the novel's structure is just as strong...as expansive, as comprehensive, as War and Peace." --review

Schami's multilayered allegory is never obviously allegorical... A rewarding and beautifully written, if blood-soaked, tale."

A perfect 5 stars
By Boris the bird
The best and most enjoyable book I have read in years. This book is like a good French film, which in its focus on the everyday life of the main characters unravels the nuances of the local culture and psychology. I say French film, because the book reveals the culture and problems of Damascus and Syria though the conversations and actions of the characters in a way that feels believable and authentic, unlike other films that bludgeon the viewer with their message. In terms of style, skill in execution, interest in the characters, and revelations of culture, I give this book 5 stars. There are two excellent reviews about this book in the Guardian (the best of which is [...]). Oh yes, it's long, but it held my interest on two 9 hour flights. One of those books you don't want to end.

As a Syrian I discovered Rafik Schami when I moved outside Syria. This book was a pleasant surprise and a lesson.

Reader should first get use to the style. It is written in 1001 Nights, jumping from one subject to another.

The events are taking place in streets and cities I know, so beside the words, I could see the pictures.

Through this book I learned a lot about politics and Syria and things "you never mention" while you live there. Two months after finishing the book the apprising in Syria began.

Though covered with history the book is describing what was happening in Syria the last 40 years, and what resulted in the current apprising.

Good read, good school. And hopefully one day I will be able to shake hands with Mr. Schami in our beloved Damascus.

I love the book
By Bassel Tabbah
The book is supposed to be "used", but it was absolutely brand new. In perfect condition. The story (stories) in the the book are sheer joy and entertainment. The book is very long and heavy and I find it hard to read it standing up in NY metro. So you have to read it while sitting or lying down. It is a great book.

Principles of Turbomachinery
By Professor
Prior to the purchase I read several good reviews. I completely disagree. The book does not show how equations are obtained, saying only "it can be shown that...". Examples are not clear and many discussions contain phrases like "the texts by Stepannof and Pfleiderer may be consulted for the equations", "A comprehensive series of papers....was given during a ....Seminar ant should be consulted." My advice? Don't waste your money, there are better books.

A good support in Design of Turbomachinery
By Snap Crackle
It is without question, an excellent support an engineering studend can have when studying the designing principles of turbomachinery.
The 4 stars rating was based upon the following components of evaluation: 1. Contents: It contains theory about every type of machine that could be characterized "turbomachine" 2. Order: It's order of presenting the contents isn't perfect, but it is one of the best.A good characteristic of the order it follows,is the presantation of principle, at the same chapter, for every machine it concerns. I could say it is ordered not primarily by the machine type, but by the machine's principles. 3. Extras: It contains a very good and full chapter about cavitation.I think a more detailed aproach to this problem, can be found only in specialized books. 4. Drawings-Graphs: It's not off-course colourful but the graphs and drawings are clear and simple, providing good understanding. 5. Index: Index is a very ipmortant factor of useability of a book. Unfortunately this book does not provide a really good index, only one which contains just the basics. This is a minus of the book, because it significantly reduces the speed when looking for something. 6. Depth: The depth that aproaches things isn't the optimum. Some of the formulas represented should be escorted with a small derivation to give a better idea to the reader how to use them. This minus, fortunately takes rarely. 7. New ideas: It is a good thing that the book follows the changes of engineering on the subjects incluted. For example it gives more weight to Net Positive Suction Energy(NPSE) instead of the old idea N.P.S.Head. So,my final conclusion is "if you still dont have a general turbomachinery book, don't hesitate to buy this one".

Amazon.com Review
Oh, growing up is so hard! There's so much you want and so much you can't do yet. Little Achilles is a crocodile who decides one morning that he's grown beyond his diet of bananas. "Today, I’d really like to eat a child," he tells his mother. She reasons with him: "What an idea!...Well, children don't grow on banana trees, only bananas do, and that's what I have for breakfast!" But Achilles won't be swayed, not even by sausage or cake. And when he happens upon a girl child by the river, it looks like his culinary dream might come true...

French author-illustrator team Sylviane Donnio and Dorothee de Monfreid have perfectly captured the hubris of childhood in this droll story. Young Achilles is so darn cute, and so sure of himself, readers will fall instantly in love. And the encounter with the girl at the river bank is priceless. --Emilie Coulter

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K—Picky Achilles, a small crocodile, refuses to eat his bananas for breakfast and matter-of-factly explains that he'd rather eat a child. Despite the delicious chocolate cake his parents make to whet his appetite, Achilles is insistent. As he walks down to the river, he notices an opportunity—a young girl sitting on the riverbank. Droll humor saves the day as Achilles meets his match. Sunny cartoon illustrations capture the setting with grass huts and tropical trees in the background. The yellow endpapers with silhouetted bananas add additional flavor. Rereading will be a delight.—Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA

About the Author
Sylviane Donnio began writing her first children's book at age eight, and stopped after about a dozen lines, promising herself to try again when she was bigger. After studying public law and becoming the mother of three children, she has kept the promise she made to herself. I'd Really Like to Eat a Child, originally published in France, is her first book for the American audience. She lives in France.

Dorothe de Monfreid began to write and illustrate her ideas with colored pencils back in grade school. Now that she is bigger, she makes her career as an author-illustrator, writing stories published in France about cats, bunnies, elephants, stinky monsters, and even cake. She lives in France.

Not funny
By kristyrae21
I had really high hopes for this book, but it's not funny. Basically it's an alligator saying he'd like to eat a child (in those words only) for about 10 pages, and then a little girl "boops" him on the nose because he is little, and the story is over. I thought there would be funny lines, or hilarious scenarios, but there wasn't :(

The book is kid appropriate, there's no swearing, etc.

This made a lovely gift. People who have young children always love books about children being eaten by reptiles.

Bought as a gift, made the child's mother laugh so hard!
By JennyPenny
We bought this as a gift for our nephew's birthday. He is only 1, but they have a ton of toys and clothes from their older son, and books are what they just need most right now. His mom opened the gift more so than the baby. And when she saw this particular book among the others, she laughed so hard! She asked where did we find it because it was so different and funny. So I would definitely recommend this to buy for people who like really silly books to read to their kids.

The Copenhagen Papers: An Intrigue, by Michael Frayn, David Burke

One day, during the British run of Copenhagen, winner of the Tony Award for best play in 1999, Frayn was presented with a curious package from a London housewife that contained a few faded pages of barely legible German. These pages, apparently found concealed beneath some floorboards, seemed to cast a remarkable new light on the mystery at the heart of the play. While Frayn began to lose all sense of certainty, actor David Burke, who played Niels Bohr in the London production and had some experience with documents of this sort, followed the action with particularly close interest. After the riddle was cracked and the fog had cleared, Frayn and Burke sat down together to ponder the winding trail of the Copenhagen papers.

By turns comic and profound, The Copenhagen Papers explores the conundrum at the heart of all Michael Frayn's work--human fallibility and the eternal difficulty of knowing why we do what we do.

From Publishers Weekly
While Frayn's play Copenhagen won three Tony awards in 2000 (including best play), and the London playwright has Noises Off and the Booker Prize finalist Headlong to his credit, he doesn't enjoy the same name recognition here as does, say, a native like David Mamet. Interest in this Copenhagen spinoff project may thus depend on readers' willingness to delve into the arcana of physics and history, and into the working lives of the playwright and of Burke, a leading player in the London run of Copenhagen. The play itself concerns a mysterious 1941 meeting in the Nazi-occupied Danish capital between Werner Heisenberg, head of the covert Nazi nuclear program, and Niels Bohr (played by Burke), his former mentor. After the war, Heisenberg was interned by the British for six months at an estate called Farm Hall so the Allies might learn how far the German program had gotten events also covered in the play. This book concerns a mysterious package Frayn received during the play's London run, from "Celia Rhys-Evans," saying that she had seen the play, and that during a stay at Farm Hall in the '60s she had found some papers written in German that must be relevant. The crumpled papers appeared to make a joke about Ping-Pong and uranium 235. In true British style, it turned out to be a hoax perpetrated by Burke, revealed by a third person just as Frayn was about to go to the papers. Still with us? Most American readers won't be, though as Frayn and Burke trade chapters and it becomes clear who knew what when, there are plenty of verbal and intellectual pleasures to be had.

From Library Journal
This series of monologs in two acts is a collaboration between Frayn, the celebrated British author and playwright, and Burke, an actor in Frayn's Tony Award-winning play Copenhagen. This comic and intriguing drama grew out of Burke's skillful hoax about a mysterious package of manuscripts found at Farm Hill near London, where German nuclear physicists were interned after World War II. Because of his intense curiosity and the possible historic relevance of these incomprehensible German and Russian documents to his play, Frayn became the target of Burke's tricks. The plot thickens as more people become involved in the prankster's deception and the victim's search for truth. Finally, a conscientious second actor of the original cast exposes Burke's forgeries. For resolution, Frayn and Burke devised this ingenious book about human gullibility and the incomprehensibility of one's own behavior. Recommended for academic and public libraries as a companion to the original play. Ming-ming Shen Kuo, Ball State Univ., Muncie, IN

From Booklist
Englishman Frayn is best known in the U.S. for his wild comedy Noises Off, about a slipshod theater troupe slogging through the provinces. In it Frayn deconstructs the mildly titillating British farce, showing in successive acts how a production decays on the road. This whimsical intellectual romp is also a backstage revelation. It tells the story of a minor hoax Frayn was drawn into. During the run of his hit play Copenhagen, Frayn received notes supposedly made by Nazi scientists held in detention after the war. He was hooked like a trout. The fact that this hoax had been cooked up by Burke, one the play's stars, makes the situation and the book all the more delicious. In alternating chapters, Frayn and Burke recount their sides of the story. Frayn puzzles over the seemingly invaluable papers in one chapter, and then, in the next, Burke details, hilariously, how he faked the documents. Frayn and Burke are both strong writers, so that the end of this short, wry, entertaining memoir comes all too quickly. Jack Helbig

Not really a companion to the play...
By Catherine Skidmore
I loved the play Copenhagen - saw it four times, and it re-sparked my interest in physics, which I read about as a hobby. I know, weird, but whatever, I'm a smart chick.
Anyway, this book isn't about the play at all, really, it's about an exchange of letters between the author and one of the actors in the London production of Copenhagen. And it's well-crafted, I think anyone who enjoys a good mystery, and a bit of the backstage goings-on would enjoy the book. It certainly captivated me and both Michael Frayn and David Burke write well and with a good deal of dry British humor.

A Sly Meditation On The Nature Of Reality
By John Kwok
This is a marvellous entertainment - I'm not sure whether I should correctly describe it as either a memoir or novelette - which explores the nature of reality. It's not really a sequel to Michael Frayn's splendid play "Copenhagen", but does delve into some of the same terrain as the play. Instead, it is a witty exchange of thoughts and letters sent between Michael Frayn and actor David Burke (He portrayed physicist Niels Bohr during the play's original London production) about a set of manuscripts which allegedly date from the internment of German physicist Werner Heisenberg and his colleagues at Farm Hall immediately after the end of World War II. What follows is a terse, spellbinding mystery which is well told by both writers, replete with ample doses of English humor.

Not What I Expected
By James E. Beckman
I thought COPENHAGEN was a great play, and I picked up this
book thinking it was background for the play (the bookjacket
gives some hints that that isn't the case, but I didn't bother
to read that. Anyway, it turns out to be less than that, and
also much more. I was sucked into the mystery along with
Michael Frayn, and read it in one sitting (it's short). I
highly recommend it for pure entertainment.

The Net and the Butterfly: The Art and Practice of Breakthrough Thinking, by Olivia Fox Cabane, Judah Pollack

In The Charisma Myth, Olivia Fox Cabane offered a groundbreaking approach to becoming more charismatic. Now she teams up with Judah Pollack to reveal how anyone can train their brain to have more eureka insights.

The creative mode in your brain is like a butterfly. It's beautiful and erratic, hard to catch and highly valued as a result. If you want to capture it, you need a net. Enter the executive mode, the task-oriented network in your brain that help you tie your shoes, run a meeting, or pitch a client. To succeed, you need both modes to work together--your inner butterfly to be active and free, but your inner net to be ready to spring at the right time and create that "aha!" moment. But is there any way to trigger these insights, beyond dumb luck?

Thanks to recent neuroscience discoveries, we can now explain these breakthrough moments--and also induce them through a series of specific practices. It turns out there's a hidden pattern to all these seemingly random breakthrough ideas. From Achimedes' iconic moment in the bathtub to designer Adam Cheyer's idea for Siri, accidental breakthroughs throughout history share a common origin story. In this book, you will learn to master the skills that will transform your brain into a consistent generator of insights.

Drawing on their extensive coaching and training practice with top Silicon Valley firms, Cabane and Pollack provide a step-by-step process for accessing the part of the brain that produces breakthroughs and systematically removing internal blocks. Their tactics range from simple to zany, such as:

Imagine an alternate universe where gravity doesn’t exist, and the social and legal rules thatgovern it.
Map Disney’s Pocahontas story onto James Cameron’s Avatar.
Rid yourself of imposter syndrome through mental exercises.
Literally change your perspective by climbing a tree.
Stimulate your butterfly mode by watching a foreign film without subtitles.

By trying the exercises in this book, readers will emerge with a powerful new capacity for breakthrough thinking.

"The Net & the Butterfly" far exceeded my expectations - it works wonders for breakthroughs in personal relationships
By Rae
As a psychotherapist and coach, "The Net & the Butterfly" was put to immediate use with a highly successful in business client who was unfortunately highly unsuccessful in personal relationships. I had not yet finished reading the last pages of "The Net and the Butterfly" when I recommended an exercise from the 'Butterfly Repellant' chapter - it has many simple exercises that create an amazing paradigm shift in self image. One exercise enabled my client to separate from an established identity that had been destroying relationships to establishing brillant new connections. This book has many exercises that far exceeded my expectations.

Breakthoughs aren't just for Einsteins
By Sarah Beak
This brilliant, inspiring, and fascinating book is a must read. I have spent hours, days, weeks, and even, gulp, months focusing all my attention on a creative problem only to feel farther and farther away from the answer and more and more frustrated. The Net and the Butterfly has taught me to stop trying so hard to "figure out" the answer. And instead, go wash the dishes or walk the dogs or take a much needed snooze and allow another, wiser part of my brain to take over the heavy lifting. In so doing, I'm allowing breakthroughs to happen without trying to force them (and without driving myself and my friends crazy). Does it work? Oh, yes it does. And, I'm so grateful. Judah Pollack and Olivia Fox Cabane have reminded me and taught me that breakthroughs are not just for the Einsteins, but also for those of us just trying to offer our own unique gifts to the world. Well done.

Must read for anyone in need of creativity or innovation
By Ric Merrifield
This book breaks down in very clear language how the brain solves problems and comes up with new ideas - and unlike most books - it walks you through how to train your brain to do these things. And if that weren't enough - it is really fun to read.

So many books today have one fairly simple idea and a handful of good examples to back it up. The Net and the Butterfly has a great example on almost every page. Books like The Power of Habit and Moonwalking with Einstein are amazing in their own right - but this book takes some of the concepts in those books to a whole new level. Just the idea of the "DN" Default Network and how your brain works when you are not actively working on an idea, problem, or opportunity, puts things in such clear terms it's refreshing. I can think of entire departments in companies that should read this.

In terms of who specifically should read this - it's a pretty long list from the most experienced CEO and CTO to the most junior person in marketing. The book is so well written and there are so many great examples from Chuck Yeager's intuition that he would break the sound barrier to the way Einstein got to his theory of relativity after collaborating with what amounted to a drinking buddy.
