This program works like nothing else I've ever tried!

This book should not be out of print! I have been a low-back-pain sufferer most of my adult life and have tried everything from weightlifting to yoga with little or no positive result (in some cases, very negative results). But this book, with its common-sense approach to both back therapy and overall exercise (making it clear that, yes, back problems are no barrier to staying in shape) got me from 80% of the time in back pain to 95% of the time pain-free, strong, and able to hike, bike, and do all the other things that would in the past have gotten me into painful trouble. Also, but just incidentally, it toned and slimmed my entire body, a selling point for Callanetics for women, but believe me, this man doesn't mind losing his "love handles" on the way to a better back, either! Callan Pinckney is some kind of miracle worker, maybe because she used herself and her own back as the laboratory for the program she created. Simply amazing!

Immediate relief for lower back spasm

The first few pages of this book are devoted to emergency relief of lower back spasm. If you've ever had to get out of bed by rolling out onto the floor, getting onto your knees, then slowly & painfully rising to your feet by supporting yourself by leaning on the nightstand...you know what I'm talking about. Her emergency exercises work.
The long-term stretching & toning program is a lot like some yoga exercises...but with some very important--and seemingly subtle--differences that will protect your back from some of the dangerous stresses that certain yoga positions put you into.
It's a shame this book is out of print. Haunt your local used book stores until you find it!

Probably helpful if you live in the UK

This book was well written and included many case studies and lists. The lists were quite helpful from a "save me the time to come up with the list myself" but nothing earth shattering (excuse the pun). The references and cases were almost exclusively from the UK so, as I live in Canada, some of the measurements and resources listed did not apply.

The definitive account of the People in the French Revolution

The French Revolution (1789-1799) was the defining moment of the modern history of the western world, indeed all humanity, its impact has been felt across every corner of the globe since that time. To some, it is associated not only with the start of the modern era in which we reside, but also with the rights of man, modern democracy, secularism & rationalism, for others, the followers of Edmund Burke and his reactionary ilk, it is the very abomination that has led to the masses questioning & rising against their "social superiors" and against the "natural" organic structure of society.
The French Revolution itself was high drama of epic proportions, as the Revolution went through various stages with increasing tensions and ferocity as the monarchies of Europe, initially pleased at the weakening of the Bourbons, became alarmed at the implications for their own survival and eventually ranged against the Revolution determined to defeat it and its incarnations, a conflict that would not end until the defeat of Revolutionary France in 1815 with the restoration of the Bourbons.
While the names of the galaxy of prominent revolutionary leaders, Mirabeau, Siey�s (the famous author of "What is the Third Estate?"), Brissot, Vergniaud, P�tion, Marat, Danton, Robespierre, Saint-Just, Couthon, Lepelletier Saint-Fargeau, Fran�ois-No�l Gracchus Babeuf & Philippe Lebas are well-known, for a long time it was difficult to discern the thoughts and objectives of the "masses." Were the leaders truly in accord with them or did the concerns of the revolutionary masses diverge from their middle-class leadership in the Revolution, if it was indeed the "leadership" they accepted? In his ground-breaking work the sublime and simply brilliant historian Albert Soboul (incidentally, Soboul was the disciple of Georges Lefebvre) answers this question about a fascinating force in history, making their mark, at the most critical juncture of the French Revolution during Year II [of the Revolutionary Calendar] when Revolutionary France was on the brink of being overwhelmed by the counter-revolution. The San-Culottes were already on the verge of making their presence known when they were dealt a blow by the royalist reactionary Lafayette at the Champ de Mars Massacre. They were to return with a vengeance, as the war situation deteriorated, on the great journ�e of 10 August when the monarchy was finally overthrown. From that moment until 9 Thermidor of the Year II, no government in Paris could function without the support of the San-Culottes and considering the fact that it was that government, the National Convention in harmony with the Committee of Public Safety which remained unchanged from July 1793 to July 1794, which defended the Revolution at its most vulnerable the significance of the San-Culottes as a force in history gains immense currency. So who were the San-Culottes? They were certainly not an "embryonic" working-class, pre-figuring the industrial working classes, as some Marxist scholars tried to claim. Far from it, indeed the San-Culottes were not against property, they were property holders themselves. Their professions ranged from that of the ordinary journeyman, to shopkeepers, cabinet-makers and carpenters, to name but a few. And their professional designations could be misleading, the "carpenter" Maurice Duplay, who hosted the extremely popular Jacobin revolutionary leader Maximilien Robespierre (the "Incorruptible") in Paris, actually employed a number of journeymen himself and was quite well-off. The San-Culottes were certainly conscious, of what they wanted from the revolutionary regimes and were not beyond seizing what they demanded as just or overthrowing regimes that threatened to stray from the ideals and goals of the Revolution. They were for instance pivotal in the journ�es of May 31 - June 2, 1793 which overthrew the Gironde. The most visible manifestation of the San-Culottes was of course their clothing (hence the term "Sans-Culotte"), the almost obligatory Red Cap of Liberty & and their abhorrence of all things associated with the Ancien Regime and aristocracy. It was the San-Culottes who manned the dreaded Committees of the Sections of Paris. It was their support and demand for his elevation that ultimately propelled Robespierre (the politician they trusted & admired the most amongst the radical Jacobin revolutionaries of the middle-classes) to the Committee of Public Safety in July 1793 (along with politicians directly associated with the San-Culottes, such as Collot d' Herbois and Billaud-Varenne) and it was their co-operation which allowed the Revolutionary Government to conduct the defense of the Republic & carry out the Terror against enemies of the Revolution. At the height of their power & influence the San-Culottes had their own army for both anti-counter-revolutionary activities and ensuring vital supplies for Paris. Their influence began to wane with the purge of the H�bertists, which crucially weakened the independence of the Paris Commune and the National Guard. The confusion which ensued eventuallly led to a breech between the San-Culottes and the Revolutionary Government with Robespierre at its head. Thus on 9 Thermidor of the Year II the San-Culottes were almost indifferent when Robespierre was overthrown. They did regroup with the remaining Jacobins, once they realized their error, to attempt to take on the Thermidorians, but tragically, as with so many historical moments which hinge on critical timing, by then the revolutionary moment had passed and the San-Culottes were swept away in the days of Prairial of Year III ( May 1795). The San-Culottes had always had a very clear list of demands which they expected the revolutionary regime and its leaders to fulfill diligently and as expeditiously as possible. Direct democracy, the right to education for their children, economic controls, the right to recall representatives, to name but a few ideas, had been some of their fixed egalitarian demands from the revolutionary governments they supported. Very few revolutionary leaders of the middle-classes would have been willing (except for the truly radical Montagnards like Maximilien Robespierre, Louis Saint-Just, Jean-Paul Marat and Fran�ois-No�l Gracchus Babeuf, in this regard it must of course be remembered that it was Saint-Just who was the author of the Laws of Vent�se), or able, to deliver on those demands, and thus a break in the relationship which was forged during the crisis of Year II was almost inevitable. A most fascinating historical work, about an amazing revolutionary force in history, standing on its own almost without comparison. This is essential for both scholars of the French Revolution & those wishing for a better understanding of the events that defined that revolutionary age.

A classic book that warned us all about coming extreme changes in weather

I listened to Art Bell for years so I will admit I am a bit biased towards him but ... I can recall all the controversy about this book when it was originally published& how the scientists and the debunkers said that Bell and Streiber were making stuff up and that their speculations and observations about future extreme weather would never come to pass only to be proven wrong on multiple occasions as we have now seen over the years.

My favorite debunker was the Southern California weather " expert " who said that it was IMPOSSIBLE for tornadoes to even form much less grow to a size where they could cause damage. This was around the time of the premiere of the film The Day After Tomorrow, which took much of its inspiration from this book.

The day the film premiered 2 separate tornadoes formed in the Los Angeles basin and did minor damage and a waterspout formed off of Catalina Island.

Recently I had one idiot respond to a post I left on this book who said that NO tornado had ever occurred in or around Los Angeles , yet I was able to find a history of Southern California tornadoes that not only formed and touched down but did damage as well dating back a hundred years or more. The Native Americans of the region were quite familiar with the phenomenon long before the arrival of whites or the Spanish as well.

Bell and Streiber were absolutely right with their conclusions and the experts were left with egg on their faces, though they will never admit to being wrong.

The only thing wrong with this book as that Bell and Streiber need to do an update particularly with all the unusual weather the US has been having in recent years.

If you want to read about why we've been getting more and more severe weather, this is the book for you.

One aside, in February, the San Francisco Bay Area had 9 or more days with temperatures of below 30 which is almost unheard of here considering that also we had temperatures of 75 which caused the cherry, almond and apple trees to blossom early. I live 30 miles from SF and we regularly get winds off the Bay here and it was even colder and windier that month than the temperature would indicate. It got as low in some areas here as 22 overnight which just doesn't happen here EVER that many days in a row. It was so cold that ALL my cats came in for the night each night and they absolutely LOVE to stay outside. Both they and I were for the fact that I had just gone out and gotten a new electric blanket, because it was that cold in my apartment even with multiple blankets on the bed. I live 8 blocks from the Bay. - Even lately we've had days with 4,5 days of 15-20 mile an hour sustained winds here when we usually only get 5 or less.

I go to Whitley's site fairly often so I asked him if he had any idea WHY we were having such cold weather and he told me that for the first time in history, the PERMANENT front that is over upstate New York & lower Ontario completely collapsed. This front rotates and has kept cold Canadian air ( not Alaskan air ) from coming to the West Coast for years. It failed and we had weather that felt like we were freezing and we were all the way to Napa & Santa Rosa.

I NEVER heard this on the Weather Channel or on any of the local news channels as well.

This is why when Whitley says something about weather, I find him to be right a great deal of the time. He knows his stuff and is willing to dicsuss it with a mere reader such as myself which is unusual for most busy writers to do.

Great read - like two books in one!

Purchased this book years ago; was so impressed that I loaned it out to anyone who was interested until it stopped coming back to me. Never forgot about it and finally ordered it anew. Even had the same cover as my original. This book is like a 2 in 1, explaining the history and natural science of our planet as well as telling the story that was later made into the movie "Day After Tomorrow." Highly recommend this book.

Good Writing, Excellent Thinking

Regarding delivery: Thought I had ordered from the US. But came from the UK so was slower than expected.
Regarding book: Was already pretty familiar with the reasoning behind the theories. But had never read the book. Got it to be sure I have the right idea.
Very good book. Will add to the review above that Michigan had a perfect superstorm over it rather quickly after the movie was out.
I think the book is potential text book material when the agendas are no longer locking in all thought.

About the Author

Mr. Kavanagh's education and professional  backgrounds include a B.A. (Economics) from York University (Toronto) in 1970 and certification through the challenge exam process as a Civil Engineering Technologist (Ontario), and as a Survey Technologist (Ontario). His surveying  experience includes seventeen years of  highway, legal and construction surveys as well as the management of municipal surveys for pre-engineering, design, and construction of municipal services for the City of Scarborough.           

 

Mr. Kavanagh's teaching experience began in 1969 at Seneca College where he designed and taught courses in surveying, computerized/advanced surveying, municipal services design and highway design. In addition he served as Chair of the Civil/Resources Engineering Technology Department (1987-1990), which at its peak had 400 students and 20 faculty. 

 

In 1983, along with S.J.G Bird (deceased 1989), he wrote a textbook on surveying (Surveying Principles and Applications)  and in 1989, he wrote a second text (Surveying with Construction Applications). Both texts, published by Pearson Education/Prentice Hall Inc., USA, have been adopted for use in Civil Engineering programs and Civil Engineering Technology programs in the U.S.A., with wide use also in Canada and some off-shore locations (for example, Singapore, & U.K.).  Additionally, in 2003 he wrote the text Geomatics, for post-secondary Geomatics programs.

 

Mr. Kavanagh is presently (May, 2008) working on the 8th edition of Surveying Principles and Applications and on the 7th edition of Surveying with Construction Applications.

I wasn't expecting much from this eBook given the price and it does contain some interesting points.
I've given this item a poor rating because of the following
- Tutorials are sometimes difficult to follow without the source code in at least one case I would have been lost
- To get the source code you have to register with a web site
- Most importantly the entire content of the eBook is freely available on the website. I ended up following along in my browser.
