Interesting, intimate and fun conversation starter
By Ginna
"I wanna know everything about you. I wanna go down every road you've been. Where your hopes and dreams and wishes live, where you keep the rest of your life hid. I wanna know the girl behind that pretty stare. Take me there." Rascal Flatts sings the song; Michele O'Mara writes the book.
This will be an essential tool in my relationship `toolbox' for years to come! I realized once I was into the book that I didn't know how my best friends, my parents, my siblings, or my children would answer some of these questions. Just Ask! offers the perfect invitation to learn and share. Excellent for couples...but completely adaptable to strengthen connection with anyone in your life.

The Can Do Workplace: A Strengths Based Model for Non-Profits, by Cathi Coridan

The Can Do Workplaceis anonprofit where
CAN = what is possible
Meets DO = the action to make it real

  • your nonprofit and the people you serve to be more successful
  • to reduce workplace stress and increase productivity
  • the outcomes of your programs and services to make real, meaningful and lasting impact for your clients, your employees and your community
  • to build and maintain "connected relationships" that bring hope and success
The Can Do Workplace combines concepts and practices with how-to applications tohelp employees at all levels of an organization work toward success with excellence. It focuses on possibilities and demonstrates the importance of building on a foundation of gratitude and mission. Thefour "case stories" illustrate the work and feature the voices of the people from four diverse, exemplary Can Do nonprofits from around the world. The chapter on "Lessons Learned" reminds us of our need to build and maintain a culture of inquiry at all levels of the organization.
The Can Do Workplace: A Strengths-Based Model for Nonprofits is a great resource for nonprofit managers and leaders, Board members and Execs. There is a starting point for everyone to build connected relationships that can, literally, change the world for the people served by, and serving in, the nonprofit sector.

From the Author
The process of developing the Can Do Workplace model and writing the book took me on a special journey into the worlds of four exceptional nonprofit organizations that live and breathe "can do" every day! The hundreds of hours of conversations with the leaders, staff and volunteers from around the world helped me realize in new ways how powerful, meaningful and important our work in the nonprofit sector really is. I see our sector as being at a critical juncture of great growth, competing priorities, external pressures, yet in possession of "mission," that is its unique strength within the fabric of the American culture.
The Can Do Model is built on gratitude and mission, and driven by practices that promote strong alignment, good decision-making, a focus on change & growth and perfecting an organization's "secret sauce." All that said, if I had to boil the "Can Do" model down to one summary sentence, I would use this one that learned from Momentous Institute, and which was echoed over and over again throughout the interview, research, and writing process: it all starts with connected relationships!

It is in that spirit that I invite you to read The Can Do Workplace and hope that you find both concepts and hands-on ideas and stronger, connected relationships that equip and motivate you and your colleagues to make a Can Do difference in your little part of the world.

From the Back Cover
There is much wisdom embedded inThe Can Do Work Place.I am most appreciative of the reminders that there are no short-cuts to transforming organizations into great places to work. A relentless focus on mission and fostering strong relationships remain central to making progress on the journey. I recommend reading and sharing theCan Do Workplaceto sharpen your perspective and renew your energy as a leader.
Tammy L. Mann, PhD, President & CEO of The Campagna Center, Alexandria, VA

The Can Do Workplaceis a fantastic read that provides tangible tips and strategies throughout every page.It is the motivation that every nonprofit leader and manager needs to build or maintain a dynamic organizational culture that ensures goals are accomplished.
Glen O'Gilvie, CAE, CEO of the Center for Nonprofit Advancement, Washington, DC.

In the nonprofit sector we talk a lot about mission, vision and values, but struggle to align these CORE elements of who we are as an organization with a sustainable business model and sound organizational practices. Too often we sacrifice the foundation of the CAN DO Workplace model-mission (our motivation and focus) and gratitude (taking good care of our people--our most valuable resource) for practices that we hope will enable us to stay in business. The CAN DO Workplace offers several key strategies a nonprofit leader can use to ensure that mission and gratitude provide the 'north star' needed to facilitate your success. Read this book to help you reset your organization and remind you why you work in the nonprofit sector in service to the populations and communities you care about.

I even learned something about my own organization
By Amazon Customer
It is always a bit scary to learn how someone else sees your organization - but it is quite novel to learn something from how they do! But Cathi Coridan taught me a lot about my own organization, Warm Heart. She turned it into a new organization in my eyes, allowed me to see real strength in what had seemed to be nothing more than the obvious way to do things. So I read the whole book. I have no idea how the other directors saw their organizations through her eyes, but Can Do Workplace gave me a really practical, applicable way of seeing the essentials of an effective organization. It made me feel good about a few things - and made me go "whoops!" about more than a few. What started out as a vanity read turned into a pretty good exercise in self-criticism and (I hope) growth.

This one-of-a-kind text takes readers beyond watching movies; it helps them “see” films sociologically and develops critical thinking and analytical skills that will be useful in college coursework and beyond. Cinematic Sociology's 15 essays from expert scholars in sociology and cultural studies explore the ways social life is presented-distorted, magnified, or politicized- in popular film. Exploring a variety of captivating classic and current films such as Forty Year Old Virgin, The Devil Wears Prada, North Country, and My Fair Lady, this unique book helps students to view films sociologically while also providing much needed pedagogy for teaching sociology through film.

The Origin of Life (Penguin Science), by Paul C. W. Davies

From award-winning science writer Paul Davies," The Origin of Life" reveals the remarkable new theories set to transform the understanding of our place in the universe. Is life written into the laws of nature, or just a bizarre accident, unique in the universe? How can a mix of non-living chemicals be transformed into something as complex as the living cell? Acclaimed physicist, astrobiologist and writer Paul Davies presents evidence that life began billions of years ago kilometres underground, arguing that it may well have started on Mars and spread to Earth in rocks blasted off the Red Planet by asteroid impacts. This solution to the riddle of life's origin has sweeping implications for the nature of the universe and our place within it, and opens the way to a radical rethinking of where we came from. "One of a handful of first-rate scientists who are popular writers. If you are going to read only one book on the origin of life, seriously consider this one". ("The New York Times"). "The best science writer on either side of the Atlantic". ("Washington Times"). "Davies succeeds not only in being provocative and controversial, but in maintaining the rigorous scientific approach of the physicist ...a classic example of how to present a scientific case, and an insight into the way good scientists work". (John Gribbin, "Independent"). Paul Davies has achieved an international reputation for his ability to explain the significance of advanced scientific ideas in simple language. He is the author of some twenty books, including "Superforce", "God and the New Physics", "The Mind of God", "The Last Three Minutes", "Are We Alone?" and "How to Build a Time Machine".

Believable conjecture
By Mr. Lorcan Bermingham
Any book purporting to explain the origin of life must depend on a certain amount of conjecture. The least we can expect is that this has a sound scientific base. Davies spends a considerable portion of the start of the book doing just this, in detailing the second law of thermodynamics (and the misconception that the origin of complex organized systems infringes this law - it would in a closed system, but in this case the system is open). He details the replication method well and suggests various possibilities for its origins: that RNA could have started out as the genome, that proteins self-replicated prior to RNA/DNA acting as genome (mad cow disease - BSE - is not a virus nor bacterium but a self-replicating protein !). Each case is presented as possibilities. As difficult as it is to say exactly "how" life began, it is increasingly accepted that it didn't start in little pools of the `primordial soup' but more likely in rocks deep underground. He presents the early earth as quite life-hostile and therefore suggests Mars as a more life-friendly environment 3.5 to 3.8 billion years ago (the age of life) which seeded earth via meteorites carrying microbes. However, the book is much more than just this Martian theory (Davies seems to be labelled by this one aspect of his writing). Finally, he suggests that the adage "given the right circumstances life will happen" could lead to a fundamental law akin to gravity for matter, that biology is due to built-in laws. But, because this is edging towards some kind of `vitalism', most biologists would disagree. Instead, it is the laws of physics themselves that promote life-building. This is demonstrated by amino acid and peptide production...the sequencing is all down to interatomic forces that seem to `discriminate' between different sequences and favour those that promote life!! Amazing stuff. The book is very readable and doesn't get too technical.

"Where We Come From".
By M. Mariba
This is a very good scientific synopsis how the Universe was formed 4,65 billion years ago through the "Big Bang". Subsequent processes following formation of the Universe are also well explained : these leading to the formation of galaxies & stars from gas and dust. Professor Paul Davies goes at length explaining how life came about : "early life' probably started from Mars with basic uni-cellular forms/organisms, traveling to earth through/on "Asteriods" hitting the earth about 3 billion years ago when Mars was still compatible with life! He also deals with "Chicken or Egg Dilemma" rather well, concluding that the chicken probably came first! This is a very accessible book on the origin of the earth, life & Universe that is well written for the general public by a very knowlegable & respected scientist, a highly recommended reading.

How to review a textbook? Well, BORING! So I guess it does its job. This book was a requirement for a class I am taking. The book was as described, and it met the requirements for the course. I bought used, saved money, and sold it back. Everything went smoothly, and this was a first semester book. I will definitely use the textbook exchange system amazon has, at the end of the course *(after returning the book) it cost me about $3. I bought this book in "good" condition, and it was better than this sites description. I'm sure that buying used is just a crap shoot anyway, but my experience was positive, and I got the correct book I ordered. Use the ISBN, get through your course, and trade it back in, and you could get away with spending nearly a third of the cost compared to buying books new, and keeping them afterward.
