The Marathon Monks of Mount Hiei, by John Stevens

The greatest athletes in the world today are not the Olympic champions or the stars of professional sports, but the "marathon monks" of Japan's sacred Mount Hiei. Over a seven-year training period, these "running buddhas" figuratively circle the globe on foot. During one incredible 100-day stretch, they cover 52.5 miles daily-twice the length of an Olympic marathon. And the prize they seek to capture is the greatest thing a human being can achieve: enlightenment in the here and now.

This book is about these amazing men, the magic mountain on which they train, and the philosophy of Tendai Buddhism, which inspires them in their quest for the supreme. The reader will learn about the monks' death-defying fasts, their vegetarian training diet, their handmade straw running shoes, and feats of endurance such as their ceremonial leap into a waterfall. Illustrated with superb photographs, the book also contains the first full-length study in English of Mount Hiei and Tendai Buddhism.

John Stevens lived in Japan for thirty-five years, where he was a professor of Buddhist studies at Tohoku Fukushi University in Sendai. Stevens is a widely respected translator, an ordained Buddhist priest, a curator of several major exhibitions of Zen art, and an aikido instructor. He has authored more than thirty books and is one of the foremost Western experts on aikido, holding a ranking of 7th dan Aikikai. Stevens has also studied calligraphy for decades, authoring the classic Sacred Calligraphy of the East. Other John Stevens titles that are likely to be of interest include Extraordinary Zen Masters, and The Philosophy of Aikido.

From Library Journal
pap. $12.95. rel Japan's Mount Hiei is home to the monastery of the "Running Buddhas" or "marathon monks" who pursue enlightenment via 1000-day marathons that must each be completed in a seven-year training period. Stevens, a professor of Buddhist studies, offers a dense discussion of the origin and spiritual principles of Tendai Buddhism, out of which the runners' vision was born; a look at the marathon itself; and introductions to several monks whose portraits add human interest. Something of a novelty item, with value for students of comparative religion. EC

No word can ever describe the emotions you will live in the reading of this book. It is sad that no one cared to mention that John Stevens,(the author) is himself a Marathon Monk. (I finished translating this book into French, in 1991)

Review
Four children bond over multiple mysteries in this historical adventure for preteens.

It's 1866, and young Emma Green has moved with her family -- including her ex-Navy Civil War hero father -- to remote Point Bonita, a lighthouse post overlooking San Francisco Bay. Lonely and isolated at first, she's also confused as to why the move was necessary and why her father seems ashamed of his role in the war. Emma soon meets other children Harris, the son of a rancher, and Sue, the granddaughter of the ranch's oldest worker and they play at solving mysteries every day. Things turn serious when a boat washes into the cove, with raving, feverish boy Rascal Pratt inside. Rascal claims to be an infamous pirate, but his real origins are intertwined in the narrative with the stories of Sue's grandfather ranch-hand Achilles, a Native American seeking his freedom, and the mystery of long-lost buccaneer treasure. Achilles is blind and unable to find the alleged long-lost booty of Sir Francis Drake that would let him buy his way out of bondage. Instead, he entrusts Rascal to find it for him. Rascal, initially distrustful of the other children, is forced to bond with them to find it and to secure his own freedom once his true origins are revealed. Scott's tale manages to deftly tie together all these threads, incorporating a generous amount of historical detail and educational footnotes about different types of boats, vegetation and other trivia along the way. Scott generally avoids talking down to young readers, avoiding preachiness while exploring bigotry and military culture in America's post-Civil War past.

A satisfying adventure for young readers, bucking fantasy trends in current Potter-obsessed lit to winning effect. (Fiction. YA) --Kirkus Discoveries

About the Author
Robbie Scott grew up in South Carolina. He received his B.S. at the College of Charleston in Marine Biology. He resides in San Francisco, where he raises his family and works as an engineer and technical writer.

Rascal Pratt - page turner for adults and kids
By J. Elias
I got the Mystery of Rascal Pratt for my 9 and 12-year old nieces, who are avid readers and they loved it. It's an adventure story with unexpected twists and turns, and features intriguing girl and boy characters. I read it as well and found myself eagerly moving from chapter to chapter, wanting to find out what happens.

The author also creates an interesting educational part of the book by including a number of footnotes that provide information about ships of the 1800s, sea lions, and other interesting facets of the book. You can easily read the whole book without going into the footnotes, but they add a dimension that's great for inquisitive young readers.

Well drawn characters and an authentic sense of place
By Pop Bop
If you reflect on Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books, I think it would be fair to say that character development and a strong sense of place are not the first things that come to mind. What does come to mind is action, excitement, adventure, and a bit of mystery.

Well, "The Mystery of Rascal Pratt", which is aimed at pretty much the same reading audience, does give you everything. First off, there is no doubt that you are at Point Bonita, north of San Francisco Bay. This is one of the best middle readers books I've seen for establishing a compelling sense of place. The book is worth reading just to get the feel of post-civil war San Francisco. Second, all of the major and most of the minor characters are well drawn, if a bit romanticised. Finally, the mystery is engaging and, while implausible, certainly appropriate for the reading level.

So, this is one of those overlooked and undermarketed books that deserve a chance, and would certainly be a worthwhile addition to a middle reader library.

beautifully written story of post-Civil war attitudes told through young people's eyes. I especially liked the setting of Marin and San Francisco in those times, without it being only about the Gold Rush. The characters were sensitively drawn and felt real.

Another win for Ruz
By alixmaree
After reading this short story, I immediately handed my kindle to my partner and demanded he read it also, just to see if he got as creeped out as I did.
If a short story has you impassioned enough to start demanding people read it, that seems to me like a sign the author has done something right. Black Rain is eerie and dim and incites a real feeling of claustrophobia. The room seems to shrink as you read, shadows gathering and the world outside fading into nothing. Just you and the equally freaked out characters riding out the storm.
My favourite thing about Christopher Ruz's speculative fiction is the way he describes his worlds. Subtle with moments of clarity, it provokes the imagination, and once provoked, the imagination is a rampant beast. The more a story titillates the imagination, the more you find yourself swallowed by the fictional reality. Its truly powerful and a real skill in short stories such as these. If you enjoyed Black Rain, I highly recommend, no, I demand you purchase the kindle ebook collections of Ruz's work, 'The King and other stories', and 'Past the Borders'. You'll be demanding your friends read them in no time.

Worth the read... Haunting, Novel and Fascinating
By Lynn - Gluten Free Celiac
This was the first Christopher Ruz story that I read and even though it read it months ago, I still think about it from time to time. Considering how much I read, that is quite an accomplishment.

The author has created a story / world that will stick in your head and make you feel like you are part of it. I find it hard to write a review without giving away anything, so I will just say that the world is novel and the story haunting.

Also, this short story is part of a collection of stories Past the Borders. Personally, I recommend that you just buy the collection... it will save you money in the long run. Trust me. Once you read one, you will want to read others by Ruz.

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1—Although this picture book exploration of feelings takes a similar list-and-describe approach to that of Jamie Lee Curtis's Today I Feel Silly: And Other Moods That Make My Day (HarperCollins, 2007) and Dr. Seuss's My Many-Colored Days (Knopf, 1998), don't count that against it. The approach still works, especially when the feelings evoked have such child-friendly imagery ("My heart is yelling, hot and loud," the child narrator explains). The book pairs brief verbal explorations of emotions with evocative imagery, popping with bright colors against the effectively used white background. Throughout the representative illustrations—a bright yellow star to represent happiness, an elephant to represent sadness, a silhouette of the Big Bad Wolf to represent fear—a series of heart cutouts, ever decreasing in size, appears on the pages, until the heroine is able to find her feelings everywhere.—Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MD

A different take on teaching emotions
By Sunshine on a Rainy Day
Each page of this book talks about a different emotion and the cut out hearts grow smaller until the end of the book. A little girl describes how she feels with each emotion. On sad days her heart feels heavy like an elephant. On happy days her heart feels shiny and bright like a yellow star.

The illustrations are simple and colorful. The cut out hearts on each page add a fun element.

This story was originally written in French and translated into English. Although the examples are at times a bit abstract ("But other times my heart is cool. I bob along gently like a balloon on a string...This is when my heart is calm.") this is a wonderful way for children to understand emotions. The book is advertized for ages 2-4. I do not believe this young age will understand the full meaning of the examples. I think ages 4-7 would be a better audience. It would also be a great book to use for those on the autism spectrum who would benefit from the descriptive language. I would have liked to have seen a boy as well as a girl narrate the story, but oh well.

By Jessica at Cracking the Cover
I’ve been in love with “In My Heart” since it arrived at my home some months ago. The words and illustrations are equally beautiful. They make feelings accessible. Children — and adults — know what it’s like to be happy, sad, brave angry or shy, but often can’t find the words to express how they are physically feeling inside. “In My Heart” provides the words. Fanciful illustrations and a die-cut heart that extends through each spread make this book irresistible. My daughter already loves the hearts and can spend upward of 10 minutes thumbing through the cardstock-weighted pages. It’s only a matter of time before she begins to understand the accompanying words — I can’t wait!

Beautiful and useful
By E. Kerby
My 2 year-old daughter loves this book. After we first got it it was her favorite, and she wanted to hear it many times every day. Now, we just read it occasionally. A few minutes ago she was feeling really mad, so I pulled it out and started reading, and she instantly calmed down. Other times without reading it I sometimes ask her, "what feelings are in your heart right now?" and that helps her sort it out better. Feelings can be a little hard for kids to identify and understand, but this expresses them in a new way. The pictures are modern, interesting, and engaging. The heart cut outs kind of add to it. Prior to this we used to read Walter Was Worried fairly often, and that is also a good one (very different from this). I will probably start including this with second or third birthday gifts for my friends' kids. It is really lovely, and it has enhanced our talks about feelings, and my daughter's ability to cope with strong feelings.

The Wild Truth, by Carine McCandless

A New York Times Bestseller

"The Wild Truth is an important book on two fronts: It sets the record straight about a story that has touched thousands of readers, and it opens up a conversation about hideous domestic violence hidden behind a mask of prosperity and propriety."–NPR.org

The spellbinding story of Chris McCandless, who gave away his savings, hitchhiked to Alaska, walked into the wilderness alone, and starved to death in 1992, fascinated not justNew York Timesbestselling author Jon Krakauer, but also the rest of the nation. Krakauer's book,Into the Wild, became an international bestseller, translated into thirty-one languages, and Sean Penn's inspirational film by the same name further skyrocketed Chris McCandless to global fame. But the real story ofChris’slife and his journey has not yet been told - until now. The missing pieces are finally revealed inThe Wild Truth, written by Carine McCandless, Chris's beloved and trusted sister. Featured in both the book and film, Carine has wrestled for more than twenty years with the legacy of her brother's journey to self-discovery,and now tells her own story while filling in the blanks of his. Carine was Chris's best friend, the person with whom he had the closest bond, and who witnessed firsthand the dysfunctional and violent family dynamic that made Chris willing to embrace the harsh wilderness of Alaska. Growing up in the same troubled household, Carine speaks candidly about the deeper reality of life in the McCandless family. In the many years since the tragedy of Chris's death, Carine has searched for some kind of redemption. In this touching and deeply personal memoir, she reveals how she has learned that real redemption can only come from speaking the truth.

Review
“One of the driving points of The Wild Truth is that [McCandless’s] famous, ultimately fatal journey of adventure and discovery was motivated in large part by a desire to escape his parents…Carine’s new book fleshes out the causes of Chris’s actions with much more detail and impact.” (Outsideonline.com)

“A moving and revelatory saga.” (Boston Globe)

“The Wild Truth is a moving narrative of domestic abuse, grief and survival, and for the perspective and revelations it contains, an essential additon to the Into the Wild story.” (Newsweek)

“Fiercely honest and gripping. . . . She honestly shares her successes and failures in work and relationships as she comes to the realization that she has tried to find in adult life what was lacking in her childhood: worth, strength, and unconditional love.” (Publishers Weekly)

“The Wild Truth is an important book on two fronts: It sets the record straight about a story that has touched thousands of readers, and it opens up a conversation about hideous domestic violence hidden behind a mask of prosperity and propriety.” (NPR.org)

“Helping her readers become more familiar with the overwhelming burdens caused by dysfunctional parents is one of The Wild Truth’s major achievements. [McCandless] touches each of us…[we] have a better sense of what drove her brother and compelled her to write about her own harrowing history.” (Anchorage Press)

“Powerful . . . gripping to read.” (Examiner.com)

“A powerful book…For me, reading it was like finding a crucial missing word in the middle of a crossword puzzle: once those letters were filled in, the answers to the blank spaces around them also cascaded into place.” (Eva Holland, Vela Magazine)

From the Back Cover

In April 1992, a young man named Chris McCandless walked into the Alaskan wilderness, where he survived for more than 100 days before perishing in an abandoned bus. For over twenty years his story has captivated millions, and yet only one person knew the truth behind his remarkable journey—until now.

Through a tumultuous childhood, the McCandless siblings clung to each other amidst a chaotic home life, forming a lifelong bond and an unbreakable trust. So when Chris abandoned nearly all of his possessions, cut off all family ties, and forged an anonymous existence on the road, Carine understood what drew Chris away from all he had known. Having to face her own truth and surmount some crushing obstacles in the absence of her beloved brother, Carine drew strength from his constant presence while forging ahead on her own unique journey.

A powerful and deeply personal story, The Wild Truth is both a revelatory glimpse into the life of Chris McCandless and the inspirational tale of one woman's resilience in the wake of unspeakable tragedy.

Interesting insight from the front lines
By M. Michaels
Although the writing is clunky and at times overwrought, the central purpose of this book is the much-needed insight into the incredibly damaging environment in which the 2 youngest McCandless kids were raised. I think the abusive environment made it very easy for Chris to cut off all contact in an attempt to define himself as a man separate from Walt. He did the extraordinary (abandoning his formerly materially-comfortable life for a meagre existence) because he was from an extra-ordinary situation. The very foundation of the second McCandless family was built on a lie, and that which is a lie cannot stand, it may take a few decades but it will fall. The core of the second family, which was Chris and Carine, seem more damaged than the first family (the other 6 kids) probably because of the persistently detrimental effects of living full time with two incredibly personality-disordered people. We don’t get much insight into the other mother, but it seems the very act of separating from Walt and claiming her own life and dignity back made a huge difference on the older kids. They all seem to be successful and ‘normal’ in a way that Chris and Carine are not. Perhaps their mother was not as nuts. Walt and Billie were so wrapped up in themselves and their dynamic drama that real parenting seemed to take a back seat. What little energy was left after trying to kill each other or the kids was spent on their careers and ‘looking good’ to the community. They are almost textbook narcissists.
Carine is not the easiest person to like; there are shades of her mother’s willfulness and self-righteousness in her actions, and she can seem more self-absorbed than self-reflective. Because she and Chris lost contact just at the point his story gets interesting, she can offer little insight into the man he was becoming, she can only reveal the boy he was.

A Very Sad Story
By Angel La Canfora
I have mixed feelings about The Wild Truth. It starts off with a bang. Right away, she's at her childhood home and declares, "I f$&#* hate this house." And I thought, "OK, we're in for some raw, unbridled honesty here." But that kind of forthright bluntness becomes muted as she takes on a more formal tone, in an attempt to write "literary."

Carine has my sympathy. Her life hasn't been easy and to live with constant reminder's of her brother's legacy and tragic end has got to be painful. But I wished the book would've kept its focus on Chris. This book is really about Carine's journey, her relationship with her parents, Chris, her siblings and her ex-lovers. She spends a great deal of time uncomfortably justifying and defending her own life and legacy, as she continually pats herself on the back or holds herself up as a pillar for us all to emulate. She just skirts the edges of sanctimony, never quite going over the edge. The writing is clunky, phrases such as "email missives" when just "email" would've worked are peppered throughout the book. I found myself skimming whole passages where she went into great detail about something like her daughter playing with, uh, a ribbon, I think, I don't know, I checked out at that part.

What really redeemed the book, for me, was strictly personal. There were scenes and recountings of conversations with Walt and Billie that were note-for-note perfect for ones I experienced with my own family that made me gasp. Plus, I've been fascinated by Chris' story for years, as I've felt he's a kindred spirit. I, too, have wandered around in nature, alone, searching, drinking in the peace.

I think this book will be interesting to anyone who has survived an abusive childhood or to those who are Christopher McCandless completists. Don't expect to be spellbound or to be absorbed in a book of great literary merit. Don't expect to learn too much about Chris' story, either. Take it for what it is: A very sad story told by a woman who has survived hardship and who seems to still be coming to terms with it all.

The rest of the story.
By EAB
I read Into The Wild years ago and was blown away by the story. In 2011, I accepted a summer job in Denali and heard several times about the magic bus that coworkers would hike out to for overnight camping. In the stories, I heard negative comments about Chris McCandless, that he didn't know what he was doing. I never made the hike to the bus and deep down always wondered what really happened. Finding The Wild Truth, I picked it up and never stopped reading.
No longer a mystery, the back story has been shared, gut wrenching and honest, Carine shares the truth about the 'perfect' family. Thank you for sharing The Wild Truth
