From Publishers Weekly
A former Mexico City bureau chief for the New York Times, Riding shows himself to be a sympathetic, informed observer of the complex changes wracking Mexican society and is especially insightful about recent political and economic turbulence and the tension between the Mexican majority and the "Americanized" minority. PW called Riding's analysis "broad, absorbing and up-to-date." January

VALUABLE INSIGHT TO CROSS-CULTURAL DIFFERENCES
By Texas Rose
Good information and valuable insight for Americans living in Mexico. Felt a little dated, but spot on in regard to the issues. I think this will help reduce frustration on both sides, and enable people to recognize cultural differences are not personal attributes, attitudes or hidden motives to drive each other crazy. With the gleanings from this book, I believe both sides can understand each other and modify specific behaviors to better connect with our cross-cultural friends and not-so-distant neighbors.

So glad someone recommended it to us. I'm passing the referral on to another expat couple.

A little dated, but essential.
By Harold Cabot
If you want sharp insights into what Mexicans are like and, historically, why, look no farther than this lucidly written book. Much news has been made since it was published - setbacks for the PRI, some progress for PAN, the halting beginnings of a middle class. But the basic culture remains as it has been for centuries - and very different from that of the USA. If you plan to interact significantly with Mexicans, this a must read.

It's been updated to the year 2000
By yankee-in-ca
It's a sign of how essential this book is that older reviews express frustration that it's twenty years out of date. But this paperback comes with an extensive Afterword about the historic peaceful surrender of power by the dominant party [which created euphoria depressingly like the hopeful Obama election], and I hope Riding finds time to cover the Fox years and the tragic unraveling of Mexico following the bitter Bush vs Gore-like elections of 2006.

I have just re-read this book - a good one for skipping around to different topics if that's your bent - and the puzzle was how an economist could write so well and so engagingly. Riding, it turns out, is a Shakespeare scholar! Reader comments in his "Essential Shakespeare Handbook," written with Leslie Dunton-Downer, could apply to "Distant Neighbors":

"... also a good read (a quality lacking in most books of this type)"!

Riding is too good an historian to be judgmental, but he's a bit hard on the Mexican father. Fortunately, there's a very different book that shines a bright light on the Mexican mindset in a realm Riding hasn't lived, having been ambassador and dealt mainly with the upper echelons. "Con Respeto... An Ethnographic Portrait" by Guadalupe Valdes plumbs the depths of the financially struggling but deeply committed, famously strong Mexican family. The couples she follows rely on each other far too much to be abusive. To his credit, Riding does point out that the higher up the socio-economic ladder, the more likely husbands are to physically "correct" (and cheat on) their wives. "Con Respeto" studies the poignantly steadfast marriages on the lower rungs of that ladder.

(In our nation of spoiled brats, we have a great deal to learn from Mexicans, something no one seems eager to point out.)

"Distant Neighbors" has become a classic because it's so well informed and reads like a novel. A must-read.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. There is much to praise in this authorized biography of Rene Boxer Enriquez, penned by Peabody Award–winning journalist Blatchford (Three Dog Nightmare). While this is a superb cautionary tale about the dangers of youth falling into senseless gang violence, it also rates as a probing, redemptive story of Enriquez, a vicious, heroin-addicted killer for Los Angeles's largest criminal street gang, with 20,000 members involved in extortion, drug-dealing, vice and murder. Blatchford explores with grim accuracy Enriquez's criminal past, prison killings, turf wars and contract eliminations around the West Coast. But the book also reveals Enriquez and his crew's total commitment to hoodlum honor, the cost in lives and status, and the betrayals and intrigues both behind bars and out in society. This is a savvy account of Enriquez's arduous self-education and personal transformation from cold killer to a man who, in his own words, educates law enforcement and the public about a prison and criminal subculture that should scare the hell out of them. Review
“Blatchford is well-suited to tell this story . . . he captures the nuances and nihilism of the prison world . . . The narrative is interspersed with fascinating prison arcana.” (Los Angeles Times)

“A gripping, powerful, chilling inside look at a criminal organization that is changing the organized crime landscape. This is a mob classic.” (Dominick Dunne)

“A fascinating, vivid and unforgettable insider’s look at the bloody, secret and deadly Mexican Mafia. Chris Blatchford’s compulsively readable wake-up call spares no one and names everyone, including the politicians who aid and abet this dangerous criminal organization, through corruption, maddening naivet, or political correctness.” (Joseph Wambaugh)

“A courageous and well-written expos on one of the most ruthless and powerful gangs of all, the Mexican Mafia. Chris Blatchford reaffirms his position as being among Americans greatest investigative reporters.” (Vincent Bugliosi, author of Helter Skelter)

“Chris Blatchford has hit a grand slam. The Black Hand is an important page turning book that will take you into a frightening dark world that shouldn’t exist… but it does. It’s riveting, and when you finish the book, you’ll get up and lock your doors. Highly recommended.” (William "Billy" Queen, retired special agent ATF and bestselling author of Under and Alone)

“A fascinating look at the world of the Mexican Mafia, more ruthless than the LCN. A must read for law enforcement and a tribute to the courage of ‘dropout’ Rene ‘Boxer’ Enriquez.” (Joe Pistone, aka Donnie Brasco)

From the Back Cover

An astonishing and groundbreaking look at the Mexican Mafia, The Black Hand is an unprecedented story of depravity, violence, and redemption

Rene "Boxer" Enriquez grew up on the violent streets of East L.A., where gang fights, robberies, and drive-by shootings were fueled by rage, drugs, and alcohol. When he finally landed in prison—at the age of nineteen—Enriquez found an organization that brought him the respect he always wanted: the near-mythic and widely feared Mexican Mafia, La Eme.

What it saw in Enriquez was a young man who knew no fear and would kill anyone—justifiably or not—in the blink of an eye. That loyalty and iron will drove him up the ranks as a mob enforcer and ultimately to the upper echelons, where he would help rule for nearly two decades.

He helped La Eme become the powerful and violent organization that it is now, with a base army of approximately sixty thousand heavily armed gang members who control the prison system and a large part of California crime. Arguably the most dangerous gang in American history, its reach is growing.

And now award-winning investigative journalist Chris Blatchford, with the unprecedented cooperation of Rene Enriquez, reveals the inner workings, secret meetings, and elaborate murder plots that make up the daily routine of the Mafia brothers. It is an intense, never-before-told story of a man who devoted his life to a bloody cause only to find betrayal and disillusionment.

After years of research and investigation, Blatchford has delivered a historic narrative of a nefarious organization that will go down as a classic in mob literature.

COULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT BOOK WITH MORE CHARACTER EXPLORATION
By Mommyof3
I am going to be generous and give this book four stars, but with reservations.
It is a good read, and says a lot about the workings of the Mexican Mafia. My problem with it is the handling of the character and the character development of Enriquez, or lack thereof. This man is a rapist, a murderer, and a gangster. Why did he suddenly go to the other side? The book really glides over this quickly. It seems that a hit was ordered on Enriquez. That they should suddenly turn on him should not be a surprise; the Mafia was his life, he knew how it works. So certainly it could not be for idealism that he defected. Instead it was to protect himself and stay alive. Now he turned and is sharing everything, going above and beyond the call of duty. That is commendable, and I am grateful to him for that. And just as he was promoted up the ranks in the Mafia, now he has reportedly become a celebrity to the LAPD, doing classes, giving speeches, etc. So this man just seems like a great opportunist, but Blatchford doesn't say that at all. To him, he is a new Christian who came from a rough background. As a Californian, I am relieved Davis denied his parole. He's creepy and Blatchford doesn't explore that.

This book takes you to the pits of hell, as you ride in the mind of a cold blooded killer.
By Joe A
Just finish reading this book and it easily replaced "Mafia Under-boss: Sammy the Bull Gravano's Story of Life in the Mafia" and Henry Hill's "Wiseguy" as the most intense mafia story Ive ever read. I must admit it changed my entire view of La Eme. Coming from a family that has had its share of camaradas and even a carnal (pg 6. Joe "Colorado") in this organization, Ill admit that I had a somewhat different view of La Eme. I knew they were responsible for lowering the drive-bys in the barrios and unlike the monsters south of the border, women and children are totally of limits. What I didn't realize was how plagued this organization is with power-struggles and politicking. Mob books have always interested me, and one thing Ive always noticed is that, if they were to actually follow their own rules they'd probably have less defections. From the books Ive read the story always seems to be the same, the hypocrisy of a broken organization always seems to be the main factor behind these defection. Most these guys would be willing to die for this thing that they grew up loving and believed in, its when they have that sobering moment of hypocrisy within a broken brotherhood (if you could even call it that), that they decide their life has better value. If you like mob book I highly recommend this one but be ready to go on a ride into the darkest places human evil can take you. The majority of this book is about that long, hard, dark ride but I think its a necessary ride the writer must take the reader so that the reader can appreciate the full weight of Renee's decision and redemption. This man (Renee) would take orders without blinking an eye and walk into situations fit only for a gladiator, only to come out the tired bloody victor eagerly awaiting his next assignment but its not until the end of the book, when Renee decides to leave the only life he has ever loved or known, that you see the true raw courage of a warrior.

Fast read, well written, comprehensive
By Wishful Dreams - Tim Townsend
This book is about Rene Esq (Boxer) starting as a teenage kid in a good Mexican family, his rise to the head of the Noestras, the creation of the Mexican mafia La Eme, and eventually his departure. It details prison life, the fear and practices of EME, both inside hand outside of prison, the growth and control of the EME, methods of communication into and out of prison. I liked this book because it is told from the mindset of a teen (through his adult EME life) and his seduction by drugs, control, protection, respect, and false security/happiness in leading his (admitted) horrible life. It is written from Rene's point of view; only part way through the last chapter, the author writes from his perspective. Anyone who knows the EME (i.e., gang cops, prison authorities) will tell you THE WRITING IS FACTUAL AND NOT EXAGGERATED. The prison gang politics & life are detailed. He also gets into his struggle in AND IN coming out of the EME; and cooperating with law enforcement and CA politics. There are 30,000 gangs with 800,000 members that have now captured 2,500 communities. (100,000 alone in Southern CA). I highly recommend this book to would be gang members, all members of law enforcement , state politicians of ALL U.S. States and members of Congress.

Another read is an excellent book "Counter/Strike" which details America's response and struggle in fighting Al Queada, but ends with the increasingly GROWING threat of Radicalization in the U.S. & gangs in the U.S..

A Culinary History of the Great Black Swamp: Buckeye Candy, Bratwurst & Apple Butter (American Palate), by Nathan Crook

The cultural and physical landscape of the Great Black Swamp is a monument to the hardship and perseverance of the people who drained and settled the region. They transformed densely forested wetlands into one of the most productive agricultural areas in the nation. Commercial crops of corn, soy, tomatoes and wheat are dominant in the fertile loam of southeastern Michigan, northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio. However, each immigrant group calling this place home brought its own culinary traditions--from pickled eggs to peanut butter pie. With a foreword by Lucy Long of the Center for Food and Culture, author Nathan Crook explores the landscape, history, culture and representative cuisines that make eating here a unique and memorable experience.

There is no such thing as too much good food
By Kathy
I lived in Northwest Ohio for 15 years and enjoyed a great variety of food, but never considered the varied traditions and history that converged to create it. This deliciously researched book walks one through the earliest influences of Native Americans, Johnny Appleseed, immigrants, and finally commercial production. The Great Black Swamp is no longer a swamp, but rather a rich agricultural area that produces an amazing bounty of cuisine that is both humble and complex. Delightfully many recipes are included and the challenge is figuring out which one to make first. I think I will try the Pita-Wurst, a tasty looking combination of all that is good about this lovely, hill-challenged corner of heaven

Try the recipes, they're worth it!
By momofmanygirls
I grew up in the Black Swamp and live there still. It was fascinating to read affirmation of my family's recipe heritage. For example, home made potato soup, a comfort recipe, passed from my grandmother, to my mother, to me, and next my girls. Not to mention the beef and noodles over mashed potatoes that my mother had served me the night before I read about it in the book! Who knew we were part of such a culinary history! This book was well done and it was fun to read of names and places (as well as recipes) of which I'm familiar. So glad this history is recorded for future generations! Also enjoyed learning about the early Native American history of the black swamp.

Reluctant Modernism: American Thought and Culture, 1880-1900, by George Cotkin

In the last two decades of the nineteenth century, Americans were faced with the challenges and uncertainties of a new era. The comfortable Victorian values of continuity, progress, and order clashed with the unsettling modern notions of constant change, relative truth, and chaos. Attempting to embrace the intellectual challenges of modernism, American thinkers of the day were yet reluctant to welcome the wholesale rejection of the past and destruction of traditional values.

In Reluctant Modernism: American Thought and Culture, 1880–1900, George Cotkin surveys the intellectual life of this crucial transitional period. His story begins with the Darwinian controversies, since the mainstream of American culture was just beginning to come to grips with the implications of the Origins of Species, published in 1859. Cotkin demonstrates the effects of this shift in thinking on philosophy, anthropology, and the newly developing field of psychology. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of these fields, he explains clearly and concisely the essential tenets of such major thinkers and writers as William James, Franz Boas, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Henry Adams, and Kate Chopin. Throughout this fascinating, readable history of the American fin de sicle run the contrasting themes of continuity and change, faith and rationalism, despair over the meaninglessness of life and, ultimately, a guarded optimism about the future.

Review
The contribution of this book to the field is that it is a well-organized, clearly written, and very readable work on this period in American thought and culture. It will be a welcome addition to the literature and should easily be used in undergraduate courses on nineteenth-century American culture. (Regina Morantz-Sanchez, University of Michigan)

This fine book is both a useful summary and an original treatment of a uniquely interesting and pivotal period. (James Hoopes, Babson College)

In a comprehensive synthesis of recent scholarship as well as a reconsideration of sources from the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, George Cotkin provides an impressive interpretation of U.S. thought and culture at a time of intellectual upheaval and culture clash. . . . Cotkin's exposition is lucid, his generalizations are largely convincing, and his incorporation of recent scholarship is admirable. (The Historian)

Reluctant Modernism is an elegant, timely synthesis. The study is a gift to historians and students, uniquely probing the minds of male and female intellectuals in the period and illuminating major changes in post-Darwinian American culture. (Sarah Elbert, SUNY Binghamton)

American Thought and Culture as Americans Emerged from the Gilded Age and Progressive Era
By Eclectic Reader
Whether you are a history buff or a historical fiction writer, if you want to get a sense of the state of science, evolution, philosophy, religion, women, anthropology, racism, and an emerging consumer culture in America as the Gilded Age shifted to The Progressive Era, this is a terrific resource. Well-written and interesting, the book offers extensive and invaluable reference notes for each chapter, a bibliographic essay, and index. If you have access to academic library holdings, the sources referenced in the chapter were extremely helpful in further research of these specific topics as they relate to the time period.

An Uneven Intellectual History of the American Fin de Siecle
By A Certain Bibliophile
This volume, the fourth in the Twayne Modern American Thought and Culture series edited by Lewis Perry and Howard Brick, looks at American intellectual history from 1880-1900. Cotkin covers this ground adeptly and even-handedly, from the pervasive influence of Darwinism on practically every area of human endeavor of the time to the ambiguous place of the woman in intellectual life. The book has its weak points, which I will mention at the end.

The first part of the book is the best and offers some of the clearest insights, though Cotkin never really does get to the heart of the matter in attempting to define what modernism actually is for him. He uses the metaphor of a "tangled bank" - the same one that Darwin used in another context to describe nature. The themes are familiar ones: how our subjects are continually buffeted to and fro between moribund Victorianism and the new, ambiguous, questioning modernism. Cotkin does a superb job of detailing how far-reaching are the ideas of progress, often espoused in the guise of Darwinism. Even the leading liberal religious thinkers of the time - Henry Ward Beecher, Newman Smyth, Octavius Brooks Frothingham - co-opted the idea of progress to create a theology that ministered to the particularly Victorian (not modern) worldview. Former orthodoxy started to become laced with aspects of rationalism, but not necessarily for the scientific pretense it provided; in fact, more often than not, this aspect of religious thought devolved into a calming anodyne for the complacent middle class, an appeal to their fetishization of progress. He covers Pragmatism, that fresh American philosophical tradition, very well, including how its professionalization also led to the development of psychology as its own academic discipline. Even in the realm of psychology the freedom versus determinism debate comes up again, with William Graham Sumner firmly on the side of passively accepting Nature's laws, while William James suggests there is room for human volition.

In one chapter, Cotkin does a fine job in detailing the perhaps not terribly surprising extent to which racism dominated the fields of academic anthropology and ethnology. Lewis Henry Morgan's work with the Iroquois and John Wesley Powell's involvement with the U.S. Geological Survey are also indicative of the search for parallelism, order, and logic that Cotkin has already illustrated. Nave optimism was not relegated to the middle-class, however. As James C. Wellington of Columbian College said, "There is a limitless vista opened (though not an absolutely unlimited one) for the prospective working of better laws, purer justice, wiser economics, richer science, and higher morality." By the end of the century, as the influence of Franz Boas grew, anthropology began to slowly slough off its former assumptions and found that "the contextual understanding of culture ... was complex and inexact."

The second half of the book provides information that is just as interesting, but much more derivative. I was introduced to some new names - Frances Benjamin Johnston and Gertrude Kasebier - but the background story has been told much more effectively elsewhere. In the closing chapters, Cotkin touches on the growth of American consumerism, and gives a few quick and insightful sketches of Stephen Crane, Louis Sullivan, Thorstein Veblen, and Edgar Saltus.

For an undergraduate student who is looking for a quick overview of the reigning ideas of the time, this book is perfectly sufficient. The first half is worth reading all the way through for the interesting undercurrents of rationalism and progress Cotkin develops, but the second half should serve mostly as biographical reference material.
