Used the refund to buy this copy, which is first rate. Tells Clarke's story of making the movie and book with Stanley Kubrick, and includes multiple chapters of the early version of the book. A must-have for fans of the movie and book.

A yawn to say the least.

Thought I'd discover 'secrets' for research on the same topic; however, the book is a disappointment.

Written to be a 'shocker' of sorts. It's okay, but didn't give any insights, I was searching for a character I'm piecing together in my book.

The First "How To Manual" for Sex Workers

While the topic of this book may seem a bit unusual, Greenery Press has always published books that catered to an alternative audience and broke ground in formerly uncharted areas. This book is no exception. Magdelene Meretrix has written what could be called the "first sex workers' guide." Ms. Meretrix has worked in a number of different areas in the so-called sex industry, from working in "live girl booths," phone sex, a "stripper," and even had a brief role in an adult film. Drawing on her experiences and those of other women in various parts of the sex worker industry, she gives practical advice about getting a job as an escort, an exotic dancer, phone sex, what things are like in the legal Nevada brothels, the adult film industry, and even "Pro Domme" work. While she cautions against anyone doing anything illegal, the information she relays in all cases is excellent. There's also a great chapter on what to do if you get arrested. Each chapter also features web sites to go to get more information about a specific topic
While I'm certainly not planning on getting a job as a "sex worker," the book was enlightening as to what this "world" entails. While in college in the late 1970s, I took a Human Sexuality class and wrote a term paper on prostitution. It's intriguing to me to see how much about "the world's oldest profession" has changed and how much seems to have stayed the same.
While most would look down at sex work as a career or even a respectable job, to paraphrase a famous quote, "anything worth doing is worth doing well." Kudos to Ms. Meretrix for writing a fascinating book about a topic most look down upon.

Good starting point

In 16 chapters, this book, the first I could find on becoming a female sex worker in the United States, Meretrix covers a lot of different types of work from her own personal experiences. While she covers many topics ranging from disease, to burnout, to maintaining clients, a good deal of this book is rather vague. More details were needed in several areas but it is a good first attempt at such a how-to book. The types of sex work discussed focus on those that use your body (pictures, street walking, dancing, etc) or your voice (phone sex) but not producers of the written word or those who take pictures -- aren't they all involved in sex work too? Please be aware of your state's laws before ordering this book or enacting any of the advice in this book. Note that I suspect the name is created specifically for sex work -- Meretrix is a Latin term for female harlot.

Eric Shipton was an adventurer when adventure meant traveling to places for which no maps existed, scaling mountains whose heights were uncalculated, and encountering people whom no westerner had ever met. That Untravelled World, originally published in 1969, is his autobiography, written near the end of his career, when the passing of time had deepened his reflections on his many accomplishments and companions.

Shipton’s story begins with his early childhood, his first climbs in the Alps, his decision to be a coffee farmer rather than attend university, and his early climbs in Africa. He recounts his introduction to Bill Tilman, through a letter Tilman sent asking for advice about climbing Mount Kenya. This introduction lead to one of the most famous climbing partnerships in history—as bonded in pursuit of adventure as Holmes and Moriarty were in solving crimes.

In 1951 Shipton led an expedition to explore the south side of Everest. His small party of four (plus Sherpas) explored Everest’s Western Cwm to determine if the South Col could be climbed from there. In 1952, unable to get a permit to climb Everest, Shipton and his team climbed “eleven mountains between 21,000 and 23,000 feet, and a number of smaller peaks.” Shipton was expected to be named the leader of the momentous 1953 British Everest expedition but, surprisingly, John Hunt was chosen instead. Of the slight, Shipton wrote, “I had often deplored the exaggerated publicity accorded to Everest expeditions and the consequent distortion of values. Yet, when it came to the point, I was far from pleased to withdraw from this despised limelight; nor could I fool myself that it was only the manner of my rejection that I minded.”

So disappointed was Shipton in being overlooked to lead the Everest summit expedition that he left Britain for South America. He never again returned to the Himalaya yet, as this book reveals, his adventures were far from over.

About the Author
Eric Shipton participated in five Everest expeditions, made the first ascent of Mount Kenya's Nelion Peak, and with H.W. Tilman he reached the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. With Frank Smythe he reached the summit of Kamet (25,447 feet) at the time, the highest summit ever to be reached. He wrote six other mountain travel and exploration books which Mountaineers Books has published in an omnibus edition.

Absolutely wonderful read -- I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Shipton (the person), the "Golden Age of Himalayan Mountaineering," and/or travel writing in general. Shipton is somewhat parsimonious in his writing -- a fact he acknowledges in the last chapter -- which is only unfortunate in so far as one finishes reading the book much sooner than desired.
