About the Author
Rita Maria Martinez is a Writing Consultant for Nova Southeastern University, where she teaches composition workshops for nursing students and tutors undergraduate and graduate students. Martinez is also an independent reading and writing tutor. Her poetry appears in various literary journals and magazines, including Gulf Stream Magazine and Tigertail: A South Florida Poetry Annual. Her work also appears in the eighth edition of Stephen Minot's textbook Three Genres: The Writing of Fiction/Literary Nonfiction, Poetry and Drama (Prentice Hall); and in the anthology Burnt Sugar, Ca�a Quemada: Contemporary Cuban Poetry in English and Spanish (Simon & Schuster). Martinez has been a featured author at the Miami Book Fair International; at the Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, Florida; and at the Palabra Pura reading series sponsored by the Guild Literary Complex in Chicago. A Provocative Collection of Poems

This spring marks the bicentennial of Charlotte Bront�’s birth. In her ambitious and timely debut, The Jane and Bertha in Me, Rita Maria Martinez celebrates Bront�’s classic novel Jane Eyre. Through wildly inventive, beautifully crafted persona poems, Martinez re-imagines Jane Eyre’s cast of characters in contemporary contexts, from Jane as an Avon saleslady to Bertha as a Stepford wife. These lively, fun, poignant poems prove that Jane Eyre’s fictional universe is just as relevant today as it was so many years ago. The Jane and Bertha in Me is a must-read for any lover of Bront�’s work.

"Fashion Remedy" is the first poem in the collection that drew me in with its provocative language. "Jane's grown weary of lingeried mannequins, of women spritzing her like exterminators,"
In this poem, Jane's anger is just below the surface, ready to leap-up. Eddie is controlling and a manipulator. He's kept secrets from her, "mothballs beneath the bed," Jane questions if she can trust him again. She is drawn to him even though her intuition prompts otherwise.
A second poem I love is "Cause and Effect". This is a poem that must be read aloud. I love the pronunciation of the words on my tongue and lips. "She puckers, she contours, she slathers her kisser with Pink Panther lipstick before slipping under plaid quilts because there's a macaroni-shaped scar on her lip." Bertha is eccentric, different, off. However, she's a thinking woman, even if her thoughts are out-there, these thoughts and ideas need someone to disentangle and translate.
"Letter to Edward" reeks anger, yet there is self-control. Sarcasm is spewing.
Lastly, my favorite poem is "Reading Jane Eyre II." "I opened a can of alphabet soup and searched for clues in letters, life preservers in broth." I could read this poem 100 times and find something different that reaches out to pluck my emotions.
A few of the poems did not appeal to me, because there is a strong tone of raw biting aggression. On the other hand, poems are not always "moonlight and roses." I appreciate the collection of poems and over-all loved reading them, but a few of them did not appeal to me.

Spring is a sublime season. Additionally, April is National Poetry Month. For the past few years, I've celebrated this special month by posting about poetry in some fashion. This April also marks the bicentennial of Charlotte Bront�’s birth. Charlotte Bront� (April 1816 - March 1855) was a novelist, poet, and governess, best known for her great, Gothic novel, Jane Eyre. Originally Bront�'s book was published in London, England, in 1847 as Jane Eyre: An Autobiography, under the pen name of Currer Bell. Published in 2016, The Jane and Bertha in Me by Rita Maria Martinez is a collection of poetry that was inspired by the work of Charlotte Bront�, particularly by the novel Jane Eyre.
This collection focuses on two characters from Bront�'s novel, the protagonist, Jane Eyre, and Bertha Mason (Rochester's wife), although other characters such as (Edward) Rochester, Blanche, and Alice, are also featured. The first poem in the book is called "Reading Jane Eyre". This novel obviously affected Rita Maria Martinez deeply. The poem is full of details about her experience with the book, the physical side--like covering it with clear contact paper--as well as what she felt at school: her teacher (Mrs. Lloyd) "hinted a secret at the heart of the text--I spotted it in her eyes whenever she laughed". These details throughout the book give the work substantial breadth and depth.
The second poem is the title poem, "The Jane and Bertha in Me", which sets the tone for this collection, by contrasting the two characters in a skillful and humorous manner, as the poet (or poetess, if you prefer) acknowledges the different facets of her personality:
"The Jane in me wants to model a black dress,
bottle-thick lenses, tuck my hair in a bun.
The Bertha in me wants to sport a turban,
a red nightgown, and chandelier earrings."
From the first poem, which introduces the book Jane Eyre, to the last poem, "At the British Library", where "Charlotte's manuscript (is) sepulchered like an incorruptible saint", I was captivated. Rita Maria Martinez has transformed her love of Jane Eyre into a remarkable creative collection as thoughtful as Jane, and as "crazy" as Bertha. This book features 38 poems (I'm barely scratching the surface about this book in this post). Each poem contributes to, in the words of poet Jeannine Hall Gailey, whose work I have also reviewed, a "lively re-imagining". There's a lot "going on" in this book. It's brimming with images brought to life by words, and it's multi-layered. It's down-to-earth, and downright funny. Some of the titles of the poems are hilarious, such as "Jane Eyre: Classic Cover Girl", "Thinking of Bertha on the Metro", "Governess-to-Go", and "The Guidance Counselor Interrogates Jane" (and the description of the female, Larry King look-alike counselor in the poem is quite funny, too).
The Jane and Bertha in Me reignited my interest in the novel, Jane Eyre. Of course, I read it in school, and I've also seen the 1943 movie version, with Joan Fontaine and Orson Welles. This book of poems compelled me to locate my copy of Jane Eyre, and to read more about the novel on Wikipedia (and elsewhere online). Primarily, I was interested to refresh my memory of Jane's character in the book, and to see if (or rather, to what extent) the book is considered to be "a work of feminism". (My "conclusion"? I think it is, in several important ways.) The Jane and Bertha in Me highlights and honors the classic novel, Jane Eyre, with poems about modern life told from a woman's point of view. This collection of poetry is so clever, so confident, and so commanding!

Charlotte, Jane Eyre, and more

I have to concur with another reviewer...poetry is hard to review. That being said, reading poetry always seems to evoke something in the inner spirit. It's getting those feelings on paper that proves to be difficult. The poems in these pages speak to me of a love for Jane Eyre, and also for Bertha, and a wish for their liberation and happiness. I loved the references to Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea (a book I also loved), and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. These references speak to the practice in the past of diagnosing women as hysterical and confining them as treatment. An explanation of the fate of Bertha in Jane Eyre, and its "prequel" Wide Sargasso Sea.
I also liked the incorporation of modern themes. One of my favorite poems in the volume speaks of this use of modernity...
Nautica
I was walking toward the post
when a guy whizzed by like a messenger.
I can't tell you what he looked like
or what he wore, only that the scent
of his cologne lingered as if saying hello--
and that he smelled like you, like the blue flask
of Nautica you kept in the glove
compartment, like my purple turtleneck
on nights I sank into bed carrying
your scent the way little girls
carry dolls to their beds, the way men
carry loose change in their pockets
all day, without realizing.
I love how it demonstrates the power of scent in invoking our memories and how we carry those memories with us, at times unnoticed, until a scent comes along and reminds us, like Grandma's cookies, or the smell of a child's hair when they were babies.
Anyone who loves Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, and poetry, should really read this volume. Truthfully, you should read this even if you're not a fan of the former or latter. It's that good.
