About the Author
Larry Schechter began playing fantasy baseball in 1992, experiencing great success over the ensuing two decades. He is a six-time winner of the renowned Tout Wars experts league, a one-time winner of the USA Today-sponsored League of Alternative Baseball Reality (LABR), and has competed in the Fantasy Sports Trade Association experts league. In all, through the 2013 season, Larry has managed twenty-two teams in these leagues and has won nine league championships. He has also been successful in fantasy football and basketball, currently ranking 14th on the National Fantasy Football Championship (NFFC) career winnings list at $110,700. The founder and president of a successful financial-services company, he fulfilled a longstanding goal in 2003, when he began to perform stand-up comedy. From 2003 to 2011, he performed at many comedy clubs throughout the Northeast.

A One-Stop Shop

No longer do you have to buy a book or search for an article that explains draft/auction strategy, player valuation, in-season strategy, etc separately. Winning Fantasy Baseball has it all in one book. The draft and auction strategy sections were spot on and really drove home some very important points, while identifying many of the mistakes fantasy owners continue to make. Schechter's writing style is easy to read and understand and there is no doubt that your fantasy baseball skills will take a giant leap forward after reading.

Super System for fantasy baseball.

This really is an excellent book on fantasy baseball for just about everyone- if you are a beginner Larry gives you the recipe to start from scratch. And even if you are the most experienced or successful fantasy player around, there will be something in this book that can help you, and certainly make you think. And Larry covers every format too- from single league auctions to salary cap games, to mixed league snake drafts, etc. For a sport as popular as fantasy baseball, there have been very few books really explaining how an expert puts together and maintains a team- until now. Seriously, if you play fantasy baseball and want to better your game, I think you should get this book. And then stay out of my league.

Don't need to rely on "experts" anymore, Schechter teaches you how to do it yourself.

I enjoyed reading through Winning Fantasy Baseball, and will continue to reference back to it as I prepare for my drafts, and throughout the season. It is absolutely applicable to both hardcore fantasy players, and beginners. It is dry informational type reading and at times can get pretty nerdy with various player value formulas etc. What this book allowed me to do was learn how to create my own player rankings and values based off my specific league settings and roster construction. What this allows me to do is enter the draft with a rankings list and dollar values that are tailored to my league. I no longer have to print out the same player rankings that everybody else carries into the draft. Developing my own draft guides allows me to see where certain values can be found in a draft. And VALUES is the central theme to this book, and to winning your fantasy leagues.

About the Author

David D. Burns, M.D., a clinical psychiatrist, conveys his ideas with warmth, compassion, understanding, and humor unmatched by any other writer in the self-help field. Have depression or anxiety? Get this book.

I've had depression for over ten years, flirting with suicide for most of them, before finally seeking help. So I know what it's like at the bottom, trust me. Meds can make you a LOT better... but they're only a kick-start to taking care of the problems addressed in this book. This book can make you ALL better by taking care of the main symptom of depression - negative thoughts - and thus preventing deeper depression and relapse.
"Ten Days to Self-Esteem" includes checklist tests to chart your progress, simple homework assignments, and daily exercises to train yourself to think more positively. In other words, if you're willing to put in the work, and let Dr. Burns show you where to start, it WILL help you, step-by-step.
So why all the negative reviews? I have to put in my two cents, here.
There are three major themes running through the brains of those with depression:
1. "I have a very special case of depression. Other people may have gotten better, but I'm different. I'll never be cured."
2. Life's details are tainted with bad-ness. ("That's nice, but...")
3. If it's not perfect, it's not good enough. ("There's a typo on my resume, so I won't bother applying for the job.")
All of these combined will invariably lead to negative reviews of this book. The depressed patient will find one or two things they don't agree with (whether rational or not), and since they have an all-or-nothing philosophy, they decide this book is worthless and can't help them, so they don't read it or do the exercises (or do them half-heartedly), and this book gets one star.
Now, I'm NOT picking on any certain reviewer here; I haven't read the complaints in that much detail. I'm just trying to help explain to the non-depressed people why there are such a bafflingly wide range of opinions about this book. Well, that's the way depressed people think - negatively. (In fact, depressed people even answer "No" to questions significantly more often than non-depressed people.)
With that said, I'll admit that I had EXACTLY the same reaction. The book was too _______, I didn't have enough time for the exercises, it wasn't helping fast enough, blah blah blah. (I have a high IQ - so sometimes my negative thoughts are downright artistic in their warped-ness.) I managed to do the exercises up until Day 3, at which point I did what most other depressed people will probably do with this book -- I put it aside to collect dust, and procrastinated, until I conveniently forgot about the exercises I was supposed to be doing.
A month or two later, I noticed that I was happier. My head was clearer. I had fewer doubts and paid less attention to that snide play-by-play announcer in my head. ("But what will they think? You can't do it, you'll screw up, stupid...") And I realized that it was this book, "Ten Days to Self-Esteem," that had taught me the methods.
I'm currently eager and happy to be ordering a new copy. Exactly what I need. Yes, after rejecting it, now I'm coming back to it, because I *know* now how good it was for me.
Yes, some of the ideas Dr. Burns presents are "common sense" -- but not ALL of them. Your thoughts control your emotions. But -- controlling your thoughts! -- THAT idea takes a while to really sink in. Do you commonly stop in the middle of a hands-on project or trip to the store, etc., to say to yourself, "I don't like these thoughts... I'll think of something happier now"? No! We just let them run on auto-pilot, dictated by outside circumstances or internal dialogue. It takes real effort to step in and say, "STOP. You're wrong. And I'll prove it - right now."
Seriously, I know this all seems simple now. But I guarantee you, in a few months you'll look back at this book and realize you only THOUGHT you got it, at first. (I'd already read several books on these topics, but THIS one was the one that actually drastically helped my depression.) Reading this book is a valuable investment in your future.
Curing yourself of depression is like climbing out of a sinkhole - lots of resistance at first, more and more ground gained as you go, becoming faster and easier. It's natural to have negative thoughts about this book at first. And I don't expect you to believe me about the "faster and easier" part until you get there, heh. But you will.
Still have doubts about buying the book? Well, I'll say it here, so you can see how irrational it sounds outside of your own head: "I don't want to read this book if it will only help me a little. I'd rather be totally sick until I get a shot at being instantly cured."
In other words, I'm begging you: Buy it. Give it a chance. Make sure you memorize the Distortions list; that alone can save your life. This book WILL help you.
Other books that have helped me tremendously with overcoming depression: "Learned Optimism" by Martin Seligman ; "Living Fearlessly" by Rhonda Britten. Check those out, too. Good luck!

Deceptively Powerful

For over 15 years I've suffered with mild to moderate chronic depression. I've been on six different anti-depressants, had five years of talk therapy, and read a shelf full of books on depression. My results have been marginal.

Nothing changes my moods and outlook as quickly or as powerfully as the work I do guided by Burn's book. His approach looks simple--even simplistic at times. Do not be deceived. The approach, thinking, and exercises in the book are sound and sophisticated. The key is following Burns' instructions and doing the work.

When I purchased my copy of Burns' book, I dismissed the title as marketing hype. The title proved true for me. In less than a week after beginning the work in the book, I saw significant changes in my mood, motivation, and outlook on life.

Get the book. Do the work. The exercises are challenging. There are days I hate Burns and his book. I do the exercises anyway--they invariably result in mood changes within hours.

i wouldnt be where i am now without it

Like many other people who have posted their opinion of this book, I too have struggled for most of my life with Severe Depression, Severe Anxiety, and manic bipolar disorder- which led to a number of suicide attempts and constant ideation... Soon after finally recieving treatment, My therapist had recommended that i take a look at this book- at first i wasnt very motivated, but i decided that i dont HAVE TO do it in ten days- so i spread it out longer- doing one chapter a week and talking/discussing everything with my therapist. It was very helpful to have worked on it with someone who could help me understand everything and be able to help me look at MY situations and apply them to what i was working on. I cant even begin to tell you about what a difference this book has made im my life.

ive noticed that alot of people are "turned off" by just reading the introduction and basing their entire opinion on a few sentences that Burns said about Medication etc... I encourage you to keep an open mind and begin reading and doing the work in this book. If you give it a chance- I guarantee that you wont regret it.

My favorite stats book. It helped me finish my PhD.

This book is so practical and useful I have recommended it to many people. Its a great way to learn SPSS while connecting/applying what one has learned in class(es) to actual data. Although it does not include advanced procedures like ANCOVA, it covers most of the basic and most used tests (and the assumptions that should be met when using the analyses) in a clear, easy-to-find manner. I use it often in my data analyses. I wish all math books were as practical.

By comparing the marriages and ministries of First Great Awakening giants John Wesley, George Whitfield, and Jonathan Edwards, Doreen Moore sheds light on vital issues of contemporary ministry often ignored by laborers in the gospel ministry.
Its research is thorough; its historiography is careful; it's thesis is compelling; and, when taken to heart, its practical implications can be life-changing. In fact, Good Christians, Good Husbands? is the only reading for which I've actually had students' wives thank me for assigning it to their husbands.

Good Christians

This is a well-referenced book that will serve as a good source for others doing similar research. I like the unique perspective on these icons of the faith. The danger of neglecting family is just as real today for all who seek to be used by God in this present age. Even though this is a somewhat scholarly book, it still reads quickly. She does a nice job of summarizing in the final chapter. I'm buying several copies to give out to friends in the ministry for Christmas. Hopefully it will spare them of future family problems by reminding them of their highest calling as a husband and father.

This is a must read for every Christian husband. Too many of us have bad viewpoints of our family life vs church life. Doreen Moore does an great job telling about these three men and their truely important impact.

Rarely will I tag a book with "must-read," but this is a MUST READ.

Author, scholar, mom, and wife Doreen Moore has done an incredible job portraying the most important part of any man's Christian life, his marriage and his ministry. But she did so while comparing not just the marriage and ministry, but also the lives of three of history's most visible Christian preachers: George Whitefield, Jonathon Edwards, and John Wesley.

This book will be one that will gradually catch on and talked about for years and years.

Thousands Overlooked

First of all, I would like to commend the author for his in depth research, complete with footnotes and bibliography, that appears to document the history of Military Police units in Europe. The key word in the last sentence is "units" because the book completely missed the mark of all Military Police serving in Europe during the time frame of his historical publication. I am sure the readers that were assigned to Military Police units will enjoy and share the contents of the book with fellow soldiers from those units. I did find the history depicted in the book and, as a former Military Policeman, I found great pride in reading about the exploits and service that our Corps provided during the rehabilitation and growth of post-war Germany. However, for those MP's assigned to non-military police units but served in a Military Police position this book is not for you. You are once again forgotten in the overall scheme of Military Police operations in Europe.

Those of us who guarded classified mission stocks while assigned to Ordnance, Field Artillery batteries, or Army Air Defense units remain in the shadows. In addition, to those who peformed law enforcement or combat support duties in Area Support Groups and/or Support Commands you too must remain a proud but undocumented Military Policeman as far as the history of the Military Police Corps is concerned. I, for one, salute the thousands of Military Police men and women who performed their duties outside the "normal" MP unit command structure even though your job and task was every bit as important.

I served in Austra and France during 1955 and then in France in 1956. I found the information to be very interesting. The reseach must of taken several years to compile. I planning on providing the author with additional information on the Military Police Highway Patrol units operating in the Northeast portion of France during 1955 qand 1956.

Still A Great Read for Real and Aspiring Lean Managers Alike

After my second reading four years after the first, I must say I enjoyed this novel even more the second go-around. Whether a new student of lean thought, a blossoming practitioner (I'd place myself here after eight years of study and application) or a grizzled veteran, this book provides ample opportunity to practice hansei (deep personal reflection). One moment self-congratulatory, then just as quickly (and more often than not) I was humbly contemplating why I keep missing obvious things--right in time with Ward, the well-crafted protagonist.

If one hasn't read this, pick it up and prepare for a bit of candy-for-the-lean-geek reading. It makes "The Gold Mine" a perfect second read in true Pauley Harvey fashion.

A different and wonderfull approach of lean thinking

The author created a story that makes us reflect how we consider the human resources available at enterprises and the management role at lean jorney.
The busines novel make easy learn the concepts underlying the lean transformation at same the time shows situations that are commom at shop floor. It also shows that transformation starts internally in us changing the way we think what is a lean approach and what isn't.
One interesting point is the authors doesn't sell the lean management as something easy to adopt. Instead, the story ocurrs during several years and shows that using lean tools isn't enough to establish a lean enterprise. Also, we must develop people and mutual trust. To be successful is necessary the right people as leader and takes time to create mutual trust.
Finally, diferents points of view are presented through three lean management experts characters (Bob Wood, Amy Wood and Phil) showing us that there's not the "right way" or formula.

Great operations "novel" - gem for the collection!

Second book from the trilogy written by Michael and Freddy... Does not give you a lot of straightforward areas to pick and address like first book but gives a great example of saving the plant from closure and turn it to success story. Tons of "daily pictures" from real life -- must read for operations people from automotive and similar industries!
