About the Author
Steve Gillon received his Ph.D. from Brown University. He has taught American cultural and political history at Brown, Yale, and Oxford. While a Professor at Yale, he was awarded the DeVane medal, a teaching award conferred each year by graduating seniors. He currently serves as Dean of the Honors College at the University of Oklahoma, and is Resident Historian at the History Channel. Dr. Gillon's books include THE DEMOCRAT'S DILEMMA: WALTER F. MONDALE AND THE LIBERAL LEGACY and "THAT'S NOT WHAT WE MEANT TO DO": REFORM AND ITS UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES IN TWENTIETH-CENTURY AMERICA. His most recent book is THE PACT: BILL CLINTON, NEWT GINGRICH, AND THE RIVALRY THAT DEFINED A GENERATION.

Pretty good for a Recent American College course text

I was pleased with this book for my Recent American college course. It isn't boring or full of a lot of detail. It has a lot of primary sources and is easy to read.

I have enjoyed reading this book so far and as a history major, post-1945 American history isn't my favorite time period. But I have learned a lot just from reading this book.

I was SO pleasantly surprised to find that this book was light years more progressive than history books of yesteryear and written in a very accessible style but NOT dumbed down...just articulated well. LOVED what the author said about values-related topics. Yeah, I think it's slanted pretty far left but then, so am I. Conservatives would have a FIT reading this.

The Spider in His Web

Essential reading. An antidote to the historians who want to rehabilitate Mao such as those I read in college, and which are still being read. As Norman Cantor said, "Historians will rehabilitate anything." After this book, Mao does not come across as the monster as envisioned during the Red Scare, and maybe not even the pampered youth who enjoyed a good riot or the beating of someone else, but an everyday, ordinary self-indulgent, self-enthralled dilettante with a penchant for managing large-scale social wreckage. In this book the Chairman seems to be an alert emperor in a curtained world who, when seeing things for himself, occasionally moves himself to start one or another historic, panoramic pageant of gore. With the calligraphy of an unbalanced spider, I hasten to add, though this good doctor never mentions it.

Excellent study of palatial intrigue

This remarkable book offers insight on three related subjects. Firstly, it gives a rare, perhaps unique, glimpse of Mao as a person, of his motivations, habits and lifestyle. Secondly, it reveals part of the political decision process preceding major events in China's modern history, such as the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. But most interesting is the light it shines on the mechanics of palatial intrigue. Scheming at despots' courts has been important in the history of many absolutist regimes (think of the courts of Louis XIV, the Ottoman sultans, or the Chinese emperors), but personal accounts of such struggles in the corridors of power are rare. This book clearly depicts the pressures that force courtiers into constant conflict in a quest for the sovereign's favor, the ways despots take advantage of this situation to cement their personal power, and the seemingly inevitable final triumph of insidious sycophants.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the workings of personal dictatorship. (I am sure those interested specifically in Mao and his rule have read it already. If you have not, do!)

This book details Chairman Mao's life, personality, actions and mental health....or lack of it. As a power-crazed megalomaniac with sociopathic disorder, Mao never loved and never cared for anyone but himself. As the monster who killed millions of his own people and helped perpetrate the Korean War, interfered in Vietnam and stunted China's intellectual growth by pitting students against their own professors, Mao makes Hitler look like a Boy Scout. The problem is that the propaganda machine of Communism spins history to suit its own ideals and goals...so this book is a critical read for anyone who wants to understand the workings of a madman. Dr. Li speaks from HIS own perspective, that of a trained medical doctor, and doesn't inject diatribes or screeds against people. It reads almost like a medical case study, at times, and the flow of events can be followed quite easily.

Not to be racist, but China doesn't have a good international reputation. Chinese are often thought of as greedy and self-serving idealists who ignore reality in favor of self gain. But...after 60 years of Communism, millions starved, hundreds of thousands executed for speaking out, and billions oppressed, you can read this book and understand why their social structure is so complex and why they have to always look out for themselves. If their father or grandfather said ONE wrong thing, they would have been killed or died in a labor camp. If their mothers or grandmothers had not fervently told lies about their co-workers, they would have been swept up in the anti-rightist campaigns and executed or exiled. So ANY Chinese person alive today is alive because their ancestors were survivors. It's easy to see how a crazed Mao could turn a country into a fanatical personality cult and warp the entire culture to his liking. it's my hope that normal Chinese can escape that kind of place and find a good balance in China to establish a peaceful and prosperous nation.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. Understanding North Korea becomes much easier after understanding Mao. Understanding the last 50 years of Chinese policy and the inscrutability of a country that trumpets peace, yet sends warships to claim territory it doesn't own becomes easier after understanding Mao.

C.Y. Kan is an expert in system integration and has over 20 years of IT experience, which includes 15 years of project management and an architect role in many large-scale international projects. He received a Bachelor's degree from the University of Hong Kong and later a Master's degree from the University of Technology, Sydney. He holds many professional qualifications such as PMP, PRINCE2 Practitioner, PMI-ACP, Scrum Master, CISSP, TOGAF9, and is a Certified SOA Architect. Mr. Kan is an Assistant Vice President now working for PCCW Solutions Limited, Hong Kong. He has expertise and interests in software technologies and development methodologies, which includes Enterprise architecture, Service-oriented architecture, Java-related technologies, traditional and NoSQL database technologies, Cloud computing, Big Data, mobile application development, agile software development, and various kinds of project management methodologies. Mr. Kan is often invited by Project Management Institute Hong Kong Chapter to teach courses on cloud computing, Big Data, service-oriented architecture, business process management, and agile software development. He is also the author of a video e-learning course, Cassandra Administration,Packt Publishing, which was published last year.

Just a basic introductory text

The good:
- provides an entry-level overview overview into how to lay out your data in Cassandra
- is written for a very recent version of Cassandra
- quick read (~160 pages)

The bad:
- one single, overly simplistic use case/example problem
- "analysis" portion was very thin
- not enough detail on best practices, tradeoffs, etc.

With a title like this, I expected a book that went into much more depth as to how to model different types of problems, walk the user through different approaches to solving those problems, discuss tradeoffs of those different approaches, provide a thorough set of best practices when modeling data using Cassandra, etc. Instead, this book is written at a very basic introductory level. It walks the reader through a single example (a stock analysis tool), and really only considers a single use case (big data analysis). Additionally, too much of it's (short) length is spent discussing Python libraries, stock market analysis, etc.

It is a great book to get a good foundation developing applications in Cassandra. The practical example developed in the book illustrates Cassandra data modeling concepts very well, and the author points out in numerous places the sharp distinction from the relational approach. Aside from the core material on data modeling, the overall treatment of various aspects of Cassandra is clear and concise. This book is a valuable reference.

Better for Developers

Seems to be written with an application developer in mind. I work with and model databases and I was not left with a good understanding of the fundamentals or thought process of modeling in Cassandra. Requires very careful reading and examples are sparse. Happy to have a book on the subject I guess.

World Religions Eastern Tradition

I ordered this book for a class I will be taking the fall semester at Ohio Northern University. I couldn't wait to start reading it. Great information, fantastic pictures and I love the layout of the book. Anyone who is interested in religion or just eastern traditions should read this book.

Well Written and Infomative

This was required reading for a course I took in Eastern Religions. The material was very well written and very comprehensive. Highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about Eastern Religions. Very easy to see the common thread that flows through them and how they developed over time. I am not trading this book in as I do with my other college text books, but keeping it in my personal library.

No Access to Connect

Not only is this book hella expensive, but the book didn't come with the McGraw Hill Connect dealio. Which in turn means you have to purchase the access for 50 extra bones. What a bummer :(

Great text

The text I purchased came at a very affordable price and it had minimal inside writings. Some items have changed from this year's edition (2014). I advise those whose professors require the 2014 but still allow the use of 2013 to make sure to have acquaintances in class to compare when numbers are assigned from the exercises at the end of the chapters. In fact, take pictures of a friend's exercise numbers because some questions have been switched around. Also, please take into account the tax changes that may have been imposed in 2014, such as personal/dependency exemption amounts for 2014, and percentages for other exemptions or deductions.

Great way to save money

This is a great alternative to the hard cover book. It includes everything you need, except for the additional Connect software. The books my classmates purchased online and in the book store didn't come with it either, so we were all on the same level as far as resources go. I highly recommend purchasing this version, along with a 3 ring binder (large for the entire book and small to pull out the chapters you're focusing on).
