Global Competitive Strategy, by Daniel F. Spulber

Globalization has fundamentally changed the game of business. Strategic frameworks developed for the analysis of purely domestic business necessarily fall short in the international business context. Managers and business students require alternative approaches to understand and cope with these far-reaching changes. We must learn to think globally in order to succeed. Global Competitive Strategy shows how we can do this by providing a unique set of strategic tools for international business. Such tools include the 'star analysis' that allows strategy makers to integrate geographic information with market information about the global business environment. Also introduced is the 'global value connection' that shows managers how to account for the gains from trade and the costs of trade. Aimed at MBA students taking courses in international strategy, consultants and practising managers with responsibility for strategic development, this 2007 book offers a comprehensive strategic framework for gaining competitive advantage in the global marketplace.

Got this for a class - it's passable
By Jhyphi
Got this only because of a class I was taking.

It has the basics of global strategy. However, don't expect massive insights. It's good for a basic understanding only.

You cannot understand company strategy by looking at countries
By Jackal
This book tries to describe corporate strategy, but stays on an elusive level. The author has the idea of a global company as some kind of middleman, finding supply in some countries and finding demand in other countries. He considers this a totally novel concept. A bit hyperbolic, but a nice start of the book. However, his efforts fall rather flat when he fails to follow through and develop his idea further.
* His theory talks about companies in different countries, not individual companies. He totally avoids individual product markets and a detailed discussion of competitors.
* The author states that the low cost / differentiation dichotomy is no longer valid, but he does not provide a replacement.
* The one idea of a global middleman, clearly does not fit all companies, even though the author gives that impression.

Half of the book consists of some case studies of companies. These are very descriptive and do not really elaborate on the theory in the first half of the book. Two stars.

About the Author
Dr. Lucy C. Morse I am an Associate Professor Emerita at the University of Central Florida (UCF). Before I retired from teaching, I was both the Coordinator for the Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology program, and Director of Engineering Technology at a Distance, a program focused on using advanced learning technologies to deliver engineering technology degrees to students on and off campus. Currently I teach engineering management as an adjunct for UCF. I was the first woman to obtain a doctorate in engineering at UCF, receiving a PhD from the Department of Industrial Engineering in 1987. In the early 90’s I served as a Program Manager at the National Science Foundation in the Engineering Directorate.

In 2011 I was delighted and excited to receive the Bernard Sarchet Award in recognition of Lifetime Achievement in Engineering Management Education at the annual ASEE conference. I am a Fellow in the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), and a Fellow in the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM), and have served as an examiner for the national Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award and the Florida Sterling Award. My experience in management has come through leadership roles in national and local volunteer organizations before and after I returned to engineering graduate school. I have lectured on engineering management, quality management and distance learning education throughout the continental U.S. as well as in Spain, Romania, Ukraine, Germany and Antarctica.

At present I serve on the Executive Committee of American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM). I have enjoyed working on theManaging Engineering and Technologytext with Dan Babcock and am really excited to be starting this blog.

Daniel L. Babcockbegan his career as a chemical engineer, earning a BS at Penn State and an SM at MIT. He then served three years as a USAF officer in development testing, three years as a chemist and technical writer for a silicone chemical manufacturer, and three years abstracting progress in solid propellant rocket development on a U.S. government contract. Next, he spent seven years with North American Rockwell Corporation coordinating development and integration of solid and small liquid propellant rocket motors into the Apollo Command and Service Modules, engine with a leave to complete a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering Management at UCLA in 1970.

Dr. Babcock then accepted a position as Associate Professor (later Professor) of Engineering Management at the University of Missouri-Rolla (no Missouri University of Science and Technology). When assigned the introductory course in engineering management he found many fine textbooks in business management as well as some confined to specific technical areas (managing research, production, or projects), but none that included topics broadly needed in managing technology — dependent departments and companies. Dr. Babcock began to supplement the assigned management textbook with handouts for his students on areas of his experience, such as project management, quality assurance, and reliability engineering. He later outlined what he thought a more comprehensive text on Managing Engineering and Technology should include, and began to write one with encouragement from Prentice-Hall. With publication of the 1st(1991) and 2nd(1996) editions, however, Dr. Babcock retired from teaching. He has since been pleased to have Dr. Lucy Morse as his co-author to keep the book current and timely through its 3rd, 4th, and (now) 5theditions.

Decent text, but a bit expensive
By Ethan
I purchased this book because it is required for a graduate level Engineering Management course I am taking. In terms of overall quality, I would give it an above-average rating. It does a decent job summarizing some of the work various management science experts throughout history and also providing useful summarized statistics about which management methods work and which don't work in a modern environment. In terms of price, I think it's a little overpriced for the amount and depth of material that is presented. At its current price of roughly $130, it's a book that's only going to be purchased when it's required text for a college course like mine.

Too many editing mistakes in the text
By GJZ
This book is a text book for a graduate course I'm taking at Ohio University.

We are only 4 chapters into the book and I'm already finding a surprising number of typos and mistakes. The publisher really needs to do a much better job at editing their material before putting it out and charging $153.

Pretty light weight
By Just Little Ole Me
This book is very superficial - just look through it - most of it is pretty much surface level and looks more like a template than even intermediate level of instruction for what engineering management is. The only worthwhile chapter is the introduction to the topic of Scientific Management. It is very hard to fathom what this book is even trying to accomplish - I think this is the downfall of the book - it sems to be written for the engineer who could be an entrepeneur, a CEO, a financial analyst/decision maker, perhaps involved wiht human resources, etc. But each of the section only provides enough information to describe (not go into detail) on any specific subject. You will notice that almost no details are provided for any subject, thus no equations, math or any quantitative information. What is the point of a book like that? How could this be used - it would be easier and more informative just to wiki specific topics than read this book.

Review
"An excellent overview of the territory and a compelling account of consequentialism in environmental ethics."

James Garvey, author of The Ethics of Climate Change

"Attfield has given us a most comprehensive environmental ethics, indeed the most inclusive, global, cosmopolitan, universal ethic. This is an unexcelled survey and synthesis of the emormous range of challenging issues (and of the literature of their debate), as we, turning the next century and millennium, figure out our human responsibilities toward each other and the larger community of life on Earth. Attfield’s 'biocentric consequentialism' is radical, compelling, urgent."

Holmes Rolston III, Colorado State University

Nostradamus & The Third Antichrist: Napoleon, Hitler & 'The One Still to Come', by Mario Reading

Although many people know that Nostradamus prophesied the coming of the three Antichrists allegedly foretold in St John's Epistles (and also, in the guise of the Beast, the Dragon, the False Prophet, and the Whore of Babylon, in Revelation), they don't know who the first two Antichrists were, nor who the third will be when his time comes. This book will answer those questions. Nostradamus differs from the Biblical Book of Revelation in his emphasis that there are three Antichrists, and not simply one. Reading believes that Nostradamus intended his concept of the three Antichrists to act as an evil mirror image of the Holy Trinity, and designed this as a possible three-stage build up to Armageddon. He concludes that Nostradamus intuited that all three Antichrists would be supra-national, in the sense that their actions would affect the whole world - and not simply their own countries. Mario Reading writes: 'The first of Nostradamus's three Antichrists is clearly Napoleon Bonaparte, given both the extent and the quality of the prophecies he dedicates to the man. The second Antichrist is Adolf Hitler - again, Nostradamus devoted an inordinate amount of space to Hitler's effect on the world stage. The third of his Antichrists is the 'one still to come', to which he devotes a number of prophecies still waiting to be fulfilled. They include dates and consequences: the period starts in 2010, with advance warning of the Third Antichrist, covers his birth in 2035, the Global War triggered by the Antichrist in 2070, and the decay and destruction of the Antichrist's empire by 2097.'

Based on 50 years of teaching and performing on the accordion, Mr. Zucco has provided us with a complete and thorough accordion method for children. In this single volume, three levels of clear, easy-to-understand instruction teach music reading and playing from the very beginning, supplemented by original solos and arrangements. Students learn to play by feel and touch rather than depending on sight. Helpful illustrations and photographs are also provided. This method mentions the 120-bass accordion, but focuses on the 12-bass instrument. One of the finest accordion methods available. DVD included.

Good book to get started with the accordion.
By Ric Trexell
I don't claim to be an expert on accordion instruction books but this book seems to be a good starter book. I has a lot of photos and drawings to explain things and has a system of easy to harder concepts to get you going. I suppose nothing beats either an instructor taught or at least video taught program but I think this will help you get going on the accordion. From here you will know if you are a player or just playing around. I like the spiral binding. All music books should be in that format so you can play from it with out it deciding to close up on you. I only give it 4 stars rather than five because I had some questions that were not answered but I suppose that would be true of any book. I think you would be safe to buy this book. Hope that helps. Ric.

Great book for beginners
By Orange County
This is a great book for beginners starting to learn the accordian. It is very instructive, basic yet has a lot of good songs to start out with that cover a wide range of skill technique. You can definitely start out with this book... no need to buy anything simpler the way I did.

Beginner's book. Very basic. Not spiral bound as seen in photo.
By BassMan
This book is very basic and is intended for people who have no experience with written music. None. That's okay, I guess, though for a Deluxe offering I was expecting something more substantial, even if only in the later chapters. Also, the photo shows what to me looks like a spiral bound book. I prefer spiral and comb books since they fit nicely on a music stand without the book closing when you take your hand away. This book is not spiral bound; the description doesn't say it is offered as spiral so I guess some of the error is mine based on what I think I saw in the photo.

Of course, Amazon shipped promptly as usual. The book I received is absolutely brand new as expected. And for some this may be the perfect starter book. If you know anything about reading music you can learn how to operate the bellows by watching online videos and you can find bass (left hand) fingerings online and skip this book. I haven't viewed the DVD. Perhaps it's fabulous.
