About the Author
Cheryl A. Coker, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance at Plymouth State University. Her interest in skill acquisition stems from her experiences as a coach and an international competitor in track and field. She has written numerous journal articles and book chapters in addition to this book. She has also given more than 60 presentations at national, regional, and state conferences, including the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) and the North American Society for Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity (NASPSPA). Coker is a Fellow with the Research Consortium of AAHPERD, was named as the 2006 Southwest District AAHPERD Scholar, and recently served as the president of the Southwest District of AAHPERD.

Pros:
It does go through lots of useful examples. As a person persuing the career of becoming an actuary I know that it is worth buying it.

Cons:
The mathematical formulae is a bit skewed in a way that it does not use a nice notation, so as a current mathematics instructor this is not definitely a good book for math people.

As a person who is trying to learn Excel, this is also a bit too difficult to learn from. Although it comes with a CD showing you lots of examples, if you cannot build it yourself you cannot really learn it. I am not proficient in excel, so I find it not useful for beginners.

Summary:
Overall it seems like a good book for people who are already in the field of analysis, but it is not for people who are fresh to learn this subject.

Sad Story of Shizophrenia

Sad, but true story of a schizophrenic's descent into madness. It ultimately resulted in the murder and dismemberment of the victim, which was chronicled on The First 48 television series on A&E. It is the story of this young man's life and his struggle and his family's struggle to get him help before a tragedy took place. Unfortunately, as is the case so many times, there was no help until after the murder occurred.

Great introduction to filmmaking basics

I bought this book as part of a grad class I was taking. I was originally going to get this as a Kindle book, but I am glad I got the print version. I just don't think the numerous "sketch" drawings would have translated as well on my Kindle Paperwhite. There is a good variety of shot types in this book, and all of them are referenced to scenes in popular movies to help with the context, or to let you go and see a live demo. If anything, that is what the book is missing. The images do a good job of explaining the movement or type of shot, but a link to a video would have been better. This ultimately comes at the price of videos inevitably disappearing from YouTube and the like over time. Still, it would be worth considering. The book helped me think about shot choice and now has me deconstructing most of the TV I watch, whether I want to or not :)

Good Entry-Level Book into Filmmaking

[[VIDEOID:mo387IFO7291KVQ]]"Setting Up Your Shots" is a good entry-level book for filmmakers. It's all about what shot is best to tell the story and convey an idea to the audience.

Each page of the book has a different type of "shot" that is used in filmmaking. This includes common shots like Pan, Tilt, Zoom, Pull Focus, etc. But it also includes shots that are rarely used, yet could be useful for a certain dramatic or stylistic effect. Some moves require cranes or other equipment, but most can be done either handheld or with a tripod. All types of camera techniques are discussed, as well as some common editing techniques thrown in for good measure.

Each technique only gets one page, and the text does not get too in-depth. Fortunately, most pages include a sketch/illustration which gives you a visual example of the shot being described.

The two best ways to learn about filmmaking are to:
(1) watch great films, and
(2) just go out and start shooting!

This book embraces both of the ideas above. Included with each shot/camera technique is an example of 2-3 films that used that technique. The author does a good job selecting films/scenes that effectively used each type of shot - he recommends classics like The Third Man, Citizen Kane, Rear Window, etc... but he also cites many contemporary films such as The Matrix, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Departed.

Finally, the author suggests "Exercises" that you can do to increase your knowledge of cinematography... these range from simple observation exercises to actually picking up a camera and practicing these shots. The best way to learn these shots is to try them out yourself.

I would say that if you want to work in Film/TV as a director or cinematographer, this book is a great entry into visual storytelling. This book is too simple for enthusiasts or professionals, but if you are a beginner then it will be an adequate resource for you without being too overwhelming.

definitely not worth it

i bought this book hoping to have an additional resource for inspiration when planning my shots, but out of the entire book there's probably only 1 or 2 pages that are even worth printing. the rest of the ideas are so obvious that i 'read' this book in about 20 min.

it's basically a big list of moves, one page at a time. no noteworthy discussions about each one other than maybe a paragraph or two. no talk of blocking, or the logistics of actually setting up your shots on the set.

just a list of ideas... tired ideas.

it's also a very irregular shape, so it sticks out of my library like a sore thumb.

'cinematic motion' by stephen katz is a much better place to start (as is his other book on directing--- 'shot by shot')

don't waste your time with this.

Imagination will soar!

This book is a must have for all little boys and girls! A mother is putting her sweet child to bed and as they go through their nightly routine, the child's imagination runs wild with scenarios in which the love from the mother is questioned. A dinosaur rips up the sheets, a skunky is super stinky and an alligator with sharp teeth needs help brushing it's teeth. In all cases, the mother replies with different ways she would find to love her child. This sweet book is my son's newest favorite and he wants me to read it daily. He is three and first became entranced by Merry Christmas Stinky Face (highly recommend as well) so I bought this book after reading it. My favorite aspect of the book is that the child is referred to as child and not a boy or a girl and the character could easily be a boy or a girl, so the book is fitting for everyone and feels personal to whomever it may be read to...it would be a great addition to any library!

One of my favorites

This is by far one of my very favorite children's books that I read to my daughters. The flow of the story is almost musical, and the premise is absolutely adorable. The illustrations are well done and very engaging. My two year old has memorized parts of the book already and my one year old is starting to retain parts as well. The first hard cover board book we had of this was so well loved that we ended up needing to get a second one. That's not a knock on the quality of the book, just commentary on my children. I would buy this book ten times over.

Dark art

Images and Oracles is an occult book much sought after but look at the price and you can guess it is not one often found. But don't Despair a publisher is London reissued this a few years ago (2003) at a reasonable price. The publishers were Fulgur and it is still available.

About this book, does the price reflect a real gem to be sought and bought. For me the answer is yes. Austin Osman Spare is an artist who was totally forgotten. His life and work lost. In Kenneth Grants earlier books the first seeds where sown to resurrect this neglected Genius. This was the first real book to bring the art and magic of Spare to life again. Kenneth Grants books are at times difficult if approached on the literal level. To be blunt they can be an assault on the mind. But this book is not that. It is lucid, well layed out and full of interesting and beautiful images. It takes us into the world of Spare.

The book also works on quite a few levels. It documents Spares Magical life. His art, His ideas and a few interesting stories about his experiences. I love this book. I have the original Muller edition picked up in a London book shop in 1990 for �2, and I recently bought the renewed edition from Fulger. The renewed edition is even better than the original as the images are better reproduced and the paper of better quality. also it doesn't cost $$$$$$$ My only gripe. It's not in colour.(Nor was the Muller original edition).

But if you want a lucid idea on Magick and why it might not all be hocus pocus here Grant is at his very very best. Instead Of Grant trying to shake us out of our dreamless sleep through words he gives us the art and words of Spare to get the dreaming mind active and willing to travel again. But at this price It's too expensive for most people who could use or just love this great book. Instead look for the reissued edition at a reachable price.
