Excellent For The Novice Special Event Manager

I was actually looking for a book about the organising of events with small groups of clients, up to 10 and at most 20 people. This was not what I was looking for....However it instilled a lot of new ideas in my crainium that I was able to carry over into my daily line of work when organising presentations to clients and events with clients.
This book was definately written for the novice special event manager in mind. It deals mainly with the staging of large events such as concerts, olympics, and charity events. They introduce the main stages of special events, problems that can occur, risk involved in taking on a special event, making sure you do your demographics homework to estimate the success of the event, chosing the venue, using television and radio for publicity to increase visitation, making a profit, security before, during after the event, the finale, closing down the event.
Even if you are organising events for a small number of participants, I highly recommend reading this book.

It's not what its cracked up to be.

The book provides you with cursory information and skims over specifics and details. It is not, in my opinion, a complete guide but more of a checklist or overview of special event management. In addition, there is not much to glean from the successful strategies that are showcased, because these too, are not indepth; the book does not really say how they were successful, just that they were successful. It is definitely not for someone doing research on entering this field.

Contains short passages about each facet of event managment. Book is targeted at readers planning large-scale (50,000+ people) events, but much of it is applicable to all types of events. Not a great read, and definitely not the only book to own on event mgmt and marketing, but nontheless it serves as an excellent refrence for specific topics and questions, especially for beginners.

A necessary, but not sufficient source

There are precious few sources of information which clearly lay out method in thematic analysis during qualitative research. This book is the most detailed source which I have found in this area. I did complete a master's program, and early on in the program found that I did not clearly understand what Boyatzis was presenting, suggesting that the new reader should first have a basic understanding of the qualitative research process before starting this book. The book is, however, clearly written and easy to read.

This book presents a limited view of the breadth of approach to methodology and method in qualitative research, but would be a fine starting point for one embarking on the design and completion of a qualitative project. Look around for other approaches, if that seems appropriate to your perspective. Other useful overview books include: Creswell Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design: Choosing Among Five Approaches among his many works, Pope and Mays Qualitative Research in Health Care and Moustakas Phenomenological Research Methods among many others. Sage publishes the bulk of the work on qualitative research.

Good, but disjointed

This is a good methods book on one type of qualitative analysis, but some of the information is confusing and seems out of order. The chapter on developing themes and codes should have been incorporated into later chapters on code development. It was basically a poor summary of excellent information given in later chapters. Also, the author's need to use thematic analysis to prove that qualitative research is as good as quantitative leads the reader to over-quantify qualitative data.

It is a great resource that I will reference for years to come

It is a very comprehensive guide. Horst details everything to the physiology of training to injury prevention. It is a great resource that I will reference for years to come. If you have never picked up a climbing training guide this would be the one to get. However, if you are not new to the training game (like myself) I felt as though a lot of this material has been rehashed from other sources. It's similar to Horst's 'How to Climb 5.12', but with a lot more detail.

I also wish the book gave very explicit training regimes on a weekly breakdown. I realize that everyone's training regime should be unique to them, but I would like a sample day by day breakdown for training strength, power, endurance, ect. The book is very generalized in this regard and provides lots of options. It would be nice for the reader to have some more guidance on a framework to start with.

Eric has done it again. this is an awesome book that's been updated with information about mobility training. There's a lot of recent development in climbing training and Eric Horst is one of the people at the center of it. I've never owned Ver 1 or Ver 2 of this book only gleaned through them so I can't say how drastically different this one is form previous generations if your considering an upgrade. I will say though that when ver 4 comes out...i'll buy it. If for nothing else to help keep the science moving forward on our largely unstudied sport. You can listen to Eric talk about energy systems and this new book on episode 10 of the powercompany podcast.

Rudolf J. Streif has more than twenty years of experience in software engineering as a developer and as a manager leading cross-functional engineering teams with more than one hundred members. He previously served as the Linux Foundation's Director of Embedded Solutions, coordinating the Foundation's efforts for Linux in embedded. Rudolf developed the Linux Foundation's training course on the Yocto Project, which he delivered multiple times to companies and in a crash course variant during Linux Foundation events. He lives in El Cajon, California.

Excellent

This book got me going in yocto. I had five books before this one, but this is the one that I turn to. Yocto is a HUGE subject and I am amazed Rudy was able to touch on all aspects. Its not comprehensive. That is not possible in book form for yocto, but it covers the main parts with enough detail that you can begin to understand the online documentation and examples. With that said, I absolutely loathe the online docs. How Rudy could transform those into workable material is impressive.

FWIW, I met Rudy for the first time at a conference. He helped me out some with my code and he told me about this book. I bought it just to be nice, but I was pleasantly surprised at its quality. I hope to meet him again so I can get him to sign it.

Excellent resource for building Linux for embedded systems

Full disclosure - I was a technical reviewer for this book, and I am the Yocto Project community manager

There are several excellent books on the market that cover various aspects of the Yocto Project / OpenEmbedded tools - the industry standard tools, resources, and methods for building custom embedded operating systems based on Linux. What has been missing until now is a comprehensive hardcover textbook-style book that really goes into depth on the entire system and draws it together to show both the complexity and the flexibility of the system, with a great description of the project itself.

The Yocto Project is itself a project - a legal entity organized under the Linux Foundation as a "collaborative project", which simply means that a number of organizations get together to collaborate and cooperate, and contribute money and people's time, to create something that is better and more standard than any of them could individually create, at a price much cheaper than any individual organization could manage. Before YP, many operating systems vendors had their own build systems and maintained a staff for them. With YP, the same system is available to everyone - OS vendors, hardware providers, OEMs, and even students and others who just want to build custom Linux distributions for embedded devices.

Rudi's book goes into great detail to explain how each tool and component of the system fits with the others, starting with BitBake, the overall build tool, and the recipes (metadata) it operates on, and then diving down in to each process the system goes through, and most usefully, talking about the build system from the point of view of a developer, covering the issues developers need to address at each point in the process. The Troubleshooting section may be my favorite, as well as Board Support, working directly with the Linux Kernel, and Licensing, which is very important yet often not covered sufficiently.

All in all this is an excellent resource for learning about building Linux for embedded systems using the Yocto Project tools, and I highly recommend it.

Understand the numbers - Make better decisions...

I do have a few years (decades) of experience in the field - and many moons ago I completed most of the coursework for Ph.d. in accounting before deciding academia was not where I wanted to be. I taught the subject at the University level for more than 5 years and now train on this subject internationally. My background also includes working as an auditor and many years wearing the corporate controllers hat. I say this because I want to make clear that this book is not just for beginners, or people without a background in the field.

I recommend this book to everyone. Accounting and finance are not easy subjects especially if you jump in and start with the technical aspects of it. Put simply the better you understand the numbers - the better your business decisions will be. I view this book as providing an excellent foundation - the more you build your core knowledge of the subject the better. Remember the key in business is making better business decisions - don't be overly impressed by people who can spout GAAP at you with in terms you don't understand. The real experts can, and should, be able to translate the rules in a fashion that aids in understanding (1) why the rule is there in the first place, and (2) how it impacts you business and the decisions it makes.

This book is written in a fashion that will not put even non-accountants to sleep and it paints enough pictures with examples of accounting misdeeds to keep it interesting - and to really drive home how seemingly innocuous (in some cases) changes to how transactions are recorded and paint a very different picture of the health of an organization.

If you are in business / work - do yourself, your future and your business a favor by increasing your understanding of the numbers. This book is a great place to start....

Must read for all employees at all levels...

i don't normally write reviews but i have to say this is the best financial book i've ever read...i have spent the past 15 or so years at the coo level with finance reporting to me...and while i'm financially savvy, i have no formal financial education...i'm a believer that finance, like any profession or industry, gets bogged down in its own set of acronyms and language...that in and of itself creates the silos too often found in organizations...sales has it, marketing has it, hr has it, etc...etc...

i always try to break down barriers and most of my time is spent as a translator...truth be told, i've always struggled with translating the financial lingo...this book did it for me and has helped me paint a picture and tell the story behind it so everyone understands...

Best place to start your finance education!

Great book to introduce you to the key concepts of finance, as they apply to every person in a company. If you're working in finance, you likely already know this information, but if you're in any other department, it is the perfect book. Easy to read, easy to understand, and I have been able to apply the ideas right away. I wish this was the introductory text in MBA programs - great place to start, as finance is, more than anything, a language. I am in sales and found the ideas a great reminder of how to position the financial value of by products. I encourage anyone who wants to get ahead in their job to read this, and then think about your company and how to apply the ideas. In this day and age, financial intelligence is critical to getting ahead!
